I'm looking for the craziest, most pain in the ass bands that you guys know of. In terms of timing and technicality that is. A friend and I have been working on material for his senior recital that is pretty difficult and I've been trying to find something else out there that ranks up to it. I haven't had any luck finding bands that truly get out of the 4/4 box or abandon tonality in any fashion. Thanks guys.

maybe CODEON...

Well, I think Codeon fits and sounded similar to the Meshuggah that I heard there...but what do I know?

Thanks guys, this confirmed what I had a feeling of before. A close friend of mine that I've been playing music with for years now has been working on compositions for "power trio" with a little bit of aid on my part. The compositions are based on 1930's contemporary classical composers such as Messiaen, Webern, Schoenberg, etc. The closest band that I can find to how we sound is Breadwinner (Yes, the band in my sig. They're awesome.) but, it still isn't that close. I'll post recordings up when we have them. Hopefully that will be soon.

I haven't listened to very much "math" music but I did make the mistake of listening to the aforementioned Meshuggah and Dillinger Escape Plan once.

It sucks imo. I don't really understand why it is called math metal because it honestly is not complex. It is extremely tonal, and bands that are considered dissonant really only have dissonant moments. Also, most of the music stays within the 4/4 box and when they do decide to venture out of it it still isn't impressive. 5/4 and 3/4 is as far as most go and 7/8 and 9/8 if they're edgy. I made the thread to see if there was any good "math metal" out there.

if you're looking for metal similar to Schoenberg, Ives and other out-of-the-box composers, check out Sculptured's Embodiment. Don Anderson composed the music using a matrix system rather than following typical key signatures and whathaveyous

not exactly "math" metal but it does use a mathematical approach

I agree with Sculptured. I'm not really drawn to this sort of music, but I fucking love that album. It's very catchy and fluid and completely listenable, but if you pay attention the compositions are fucking crazy. Well worth picking up. As far as I can tell it's borderline impossible to get copies of the first 2 right now.

link doesn't work viewer. And I don't pretend to be good at analysis of music in this way, but what about stuff like Gorguts and newer Deathspell Omega?
