What does everyone think of the Melvins? I'm a huge fan of Mike Patton and almost all of his projects, Mr Bungle and Fantomas being my favourites. I heard about Melvins being somewhat sludgy with cool Sabbathian riffage and stuff and I've been meaning to check them out. It seems they've got many an album out and I don't know what the best starting point would be.

How do their earlier and later periods differ from each other and what do the albums sound like? The punky attitude that some people mention about some of their works doesn't really appeal to me, as I'd like to explore their darker, more droney material, preferably with cool riffery and classic Patton-esque vocals.

Any recommendations?

The track McGruff the Crime Dog from the Jello Biafra/Melvins collaboration has one of the coolest riffs ever.
