Personally, I agree with everything he said in that interview, and can understand exactly why he's chosen to stop. I feel that SYL did what it set out to do, and it would just tarnish the name to go on with it.

He's said before in past interviews that "At the end of the day, I want to be a big metal god, I don't want to be a musical genius. I just want to be a solid dude. I don't want to be a druggie or a deadbeat dad or some mysogenic prick, I just want to be a solid person."

That said, he jumped into the business at like 20 years old with Steve Vai's band, and in the past 14 years has produced, written, or recorded 35+ albums. The man really is a musical genius - his solo work is testament to that. Even if he stopped making music, period, we still have a ton of his stuff around - more than most people even dream of doing, and all of it is good.

As long as he continues to do the DTB, I'm fine with anything he decides to do.

Errrr... as far as I'm concerned that's what they did after "City" (or should I say the live in Australia) which is their masterpiece (after that I think all is from very bad to merely mediocre)... Actually it was never supposed to go on, but Gene insisted so much that they kept doing it. Gene... and probably the bank-keeper since SYL is Devin's most selling project by far apparently. I'm not worried about the musicians anyway, Gene will find his way, Byron plays in Fear Factory, and the other guy will find something as well it's obvious.

Gene says:

Responding to Devin's comments from the Imperiumi interview, Hoglan has issued the following statement:

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I read the Finnish interview. True, Dev is burnt out, and of course he can change his mind quicker than bolt of lightning, but, just two days ago, he and I were talking about the next SYL record, what we're gonna do on it, and how absolutely mind-blowing it will be. We ARE taking some time off for Devin to have some much-needed family time, but, we ARE hitting the road again in March 2007, headlining tours of both America and Europe, as well as Australia and the Far East. And I am shooting the straight shit with you, as I always do. We are too good to just dissolve, and those are Dev's words. I will never apologize for one of my bandmates speaking his mind, and if that was what was on Devin's mind at that exact time and date, then that's what was on his mind. Give the man some space. Don't worry kiddies, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD is not disappearing anytime soon. We are a fuckin' fungus. No cream or lotion is gonna do us in that easily. Unless, of course, it's Vagisil."

Isn't Devin bipolar anyway? If so he can change his mind three times within an hour. Not a big deal.

Didn't he want to stop before SYL but change his mind after the WTC attacks, the war on terror, all that sort of stuff? I don't think he gets to stop the band until I've seen him play at least once, as that may result in violence and we don't want any more of that. Oh well, worst case scenario we'll still have DTB.

well, as Devin get's a bit older, i think the need to create some more mellower stuff is getting bigger now... the crazy period around his first album and City are gone and dealt with, that being said, i think everything he released after those two are truelly great albums, enough weird and crazy stuff in it, but i think his mind is set on being more stable now...

I remember an interview with him though, where he said he needs SYL as much as he needs the devin townsend band..
one, obviously crazy and loud as fuck, and one, still crazy, but more on the mellow side..
He said he needed both of them, it kept him in balance, as he would freak out if he only did SYL, all that agression and cussing, however, without SYL, he though that the devin townsend band might not be enough of an outlet to vent his anger with...

Whatever he does, i cant say this of any artist/band out there, but i really like all of his work.. so whatever the choice, i've got a nice collection of albums laying around here, all thanks to Devin and the band(s).. just look at what he has done for the past couple of years.. amazing!

He might be burned out now yeah.. had a busy period behind his back, so a well deserved break might be mandatory... however, i still hope he will find the energy again to create more SYL songs, maybe in a lower tempo, but i hope he will continue his work on SYL, if not.. bummer, still have a great collection of his work..
