The official UMOS NWOBHM tread!!

LOL NWOBHM my favourite subject of alltime. And I'm going to do my very best to keep NWOBHM alive by stillplaying all the music and talking about it constantly to anyone who listens to me, although quite a few times I think I bore the pants off folk cos I'm slightly obsessed with NWOBHM.

For me anyway the nwobhm scene was just the best time ever for music. I was lucky in that I got to see absolutely loads of nwobhm bands cos they all seemed to want to play in Glasgow and also in the Bungalow Bar pub jsut about a mile from my house there were bands playing there every night of the week. I used to go see a band at least 5 times a week. It was the best time of my life and the music was so full of energy and just so awesome. At the time going to see all these bands, I didn't think I'd be still listening to most of it all to this very day. I mean, I'm into my classic rock bands like Zeppelin, Sabbath, Floyd, AC/DC, Purple, UFO and Rush and much as I love all those bands, I still keep going back to the NWOBHM bands. Folk are always saying to me that I'm living in the past but the simple thing is that I don't think I'm living in the past at all, I still listen to nwobhm cos I don't think there has been any better bands out there to make me stop listening to it.

When I went to see Motorhead + Girlschool the other week, we were talking about how we got into nwobhm and I think it was cos when I was still at school, we allused to go round to various houses on a Friday night and listen to Tommy Vance's rock show on radio and I think that's where I first heard Girlschool and Saxon and then decided to check them out when they played here and that was me hooked on nwobhm. Maybe I am living in the past, I don't know and I've been listening to nwobhm for more than 20 years and I can honestly say that I'll still be listening to it 20 years from now. And I'm still wearing the same gear, well not the exact same gear, but I still dress the same way as I did back in the middle 80s - I still wear my levi jacket covered in badges & patches - its awesome - and see when I went to see Saxon few weeks ago, someone offered me £10 to buy my Angel Witch patch off me. LOL no way would I sell that!!!!

Next band I'm seeing is Magnum (were they nwobhm) but the band I'm ultra looking forward to seeing is the mighty BLITZKRIEG - they are playing a few dates in England and in Ireland in February, think it's Ireland I'll be going to see them cos I've some friends there. Blitzkrieg are absolutely sensational and their new album is fantastic.

Here's a list of some of the bands I've been lucky enough to see.

DIAMOND HEAD
ANGEL WITCH
SAXON
GIRLSCHOOL
PRAYING MANTIS
BLITZKRIEG
VENOM
RAVEN
TANK
VARDIS
TYGERS OF PAN TANG
FIST
MORE
DARK STAR
WITCHFYNDE
WITCHFYNDER GENERAL
RED ALERT
DEDRINGER
QUARTZ
JAGUAR
SARACEN
LIONHEART
WHITE SPIRIT
CHASAR
A II Z

All those concerts were amazing, the one in Edinburgh where I saw Tank, Girlschool and Angel Witch play on the same bill was just too awesome for words but another great one was seeing Girlschool with Raven as support. At the end of the concert both bands came on stage together and played about 4 songs and cos it was the last night of the tour, the roadies ran on stage with loads of custard pies and started throwing the pies at both bands, so everyone's faces ended up covered in these custard cream pie things!!! Now that's rock n roll for you lol!!!!

That's quite impressive, to say the least.

To have witnessed such history makes me jealous. I was too young at the time, and was not yet into metal (I got in in 1984 at the age of 12) so I missed the NWOBHM as it occured. I'm sure it was thrilling.

I did experience the 'wave of American thrash' that rose to prominence here in America and really considered it to be a very exciting time, but somehow, I think it pales in comparison to what must have been the NWOBHM (a lot of that is due to the lack of depth and timelessness in most thrash, IMO).

Good for you!

AT the time I didn't even realise how really lucky I was getting to see all those bands. And that's just some of the nwobhm bands that I saw, I saw a lot more than that but those were the ones that just came straight into my head. I wish I could go back in time and see them all again cos it truly was the most superb time ever!! And the Bungalow Bar where I saw quite a few of those bands, I wasn't old enough to get into the bar in those days but if you were just going to see the band you could get in as long as you stayed away from the bar.

But the good thing is over the past 18 months, I've seen quite a few bands that I saw about 20 years ago, not all of them nwobhm bands right enough - but I saw Rush last Sep for the third time, then Saxon a few weeks later, then about 2 weeks after Saxon I saw Budgie and then a few weeks after that I saw Whitesnake (for about the 7th time). Then Jan this year I saw Thin Lizzy, then Judas Priest with The Scorpions, then Budgie again, Saxon again, then Motorhead and Girlschool just 2 weeks ago. So its really fantastic that there are still loads of these bands out touring and they all still sound as sensational as they did in the early days. In fact I would say Saxon and Budgie and Girlschool and Rush of course, they all sound 40 million times better!!!

Also remembered another few that I saw:-

SAMSON
HEAVY PETTIN
GIRL
CHEVY

Where is Griffin?

NWOBHM, well I start at metal with Iron Maiden so I guess yes it is basic for me.

It was a great era marked by many bands covering a nice spectrum from Venom to Quartz, both male and female bands. You can't top a better representation of what metal is about.

Some bands didn't last much (Avenger), some changed with time (Demon), some become greater than expected (Iron Maiden) and some keep relentlesstly showing what metal is about (Saxon).

I constantly looking for nice NWOBHM bands to engross my collection so far, I have a few bands, some I like btter than others, some I like all their available material, some just a sample of their catalogue:

Saxon
Angel Witch
Iron Maiden
Def Leppard
Demon
Avenger
Jaguar
Girlschool
Rock Goddess
Samson
Tank
Bliztkrieg
Diamond Head
Quartz
Witchfynde
Witchfinder General
Praying Mantis
Fist

I forgot to add:

Tygers Of Pan Tang
Tokyo Blade
Satan/Pariah
Warfare
Venom
Grim Reaper
Tytan

Here's my small collection. Sweet! :)

Mythra
Saxon
Angel Witch
Iron Maiden
Jaguar
Samson
Tank
Holocaust
Diamond Head
Witchfinder General
Tigers of Pan Tang

LOL is that the only 2 nwobhm bands you've seen or is that the only 2 albums you've got. You should get a hold of Angel Witch's first album, it's been re-released with the original 10 songs plus 10 bonus tracks including the mindblowing Baphomet, you'd love it. And Diamond Head's Lightening to the Nations CD, its amazing. And you can't go wrong with Metal For Muthas 1 & 2, some of the best nwobhm songs are on those 2 cds - Trespass One of These Days and Stormchild - awesome songs.

I forgot to mention that I've seen Maiden as well, I like them but they were never really one of my favourite bands. Saxon are supposed to be doing a US tour in March, so you might be able to get to see Saxon again if they play near you. They're playing in Glasgow this spring, so I'll see them again - you can never have enough Saxon that's what I say.

Motorhead, Venom, Diamond Head basically the bands you folks have mentioned before I listen to because of Metallica liked them (the pre-1991
Metallica) plus they also turned me on to punk music as well along with
Anthrax.

I've been searching for a Blitzkrieg official release for a while now. I've checked amazon.com and other places, but nothing! Any links, or trade offers would be greatly appreciated!

The soundscape of my youth! Maiden led the way, of course, and Saxon right behind them. But there are tons of great albums that still remain mostly unacknowledged in the metal world.

My favorites include: early Demon!, Diamondhead, Raven, Rock Goddess, Quartz, Tygers of Pan Tang, Fist, Grim Reaper, Tokyo Blade, and Witchfinder General

Many bands that I liked back then weren't technically NWOBHM because they were from Scandanavia. But I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Picture, 220 Volt, OZ, Witchcross, and Europe (except for Final Letdown).

Have you guys seen this new book by Martin Popoff?

I just got it this week so I'm not too far into it but it's a fun read so far. You can order it from Amazon.
