Britain’s Independent is reporting that classic rock guitarist and singer, Rick Derringer, has died at the age of 77.
Derringer’s longtime friend and caretaker, Tony Wilson, shared the news via Facebook. The guitarist was surrounded by his wife, Jenda, and Wilson when he passed on May 26. No cause of death has been given.
Guitar Meets Science has paid tribute to Derringer with a mini-documentary on his illustrious career. Check it out below:
“We dive into the extraordinary six-decade odyssey of Rick Derringer — a guitar prodigy who hit #1 at 17 and never stopped reinventing himself. From teenage stardom with The McCoys and ‘Hang On Sloopy’, to his electrifying runs with Johnny and Edgar Winter, Derringer left his fingerprints across rock, blues, jazz, and even pro wrestling. He played with Steely Dan, fronted his own bands, produced Weird Al’s biggest hits, and gave Hulk Hogan his anthem. This isn’t just the story of a guitarist — it’s the story of a shape-shifter, a studio assassin, and a legacy that defies genre.”
Tony Wilson shared the following in the wake of Derringer’s passing:
Ormond Beach, FL – Renowned guitarist and entertainer Rick Derringer passed on at 8:09 PM on May 26th, surrounded by his loving wife’ Singer Songwriter and band of 28 years Jenda Derringer, his caretaker and close friend Tony Wilson (AKA) Young James Brown.
