The Sword/Early Man/Saviors

I've been listening to Torche a lot.

It's what Solitude Aeturnus would sound like if they consumed a lot of psychedelics and didn't think that Dio-era Sabbath was cool.

yeah what gives with the sword hype? like a million other bands didnt already do this? why the love from the nation of hipster?

there's also this hipster band that sounds like a bad copy of NWOBHM stuff like diamondhead and stuff and everyone is going crazy for them too, but I can't remember the name.

I think metal was waiting for me to leave the US so it could get cool. I was totally keeping it down for many years.

yeah, that Sword record is pretty darn mediocre and certainly nothing new (not to mention totally lacking in dynamics). The difference is that they hired a good publicist.

i have to admit, i like the guitar tone and some of the riffs are good, but yeah i was kind of surprised at how middle of the road the sword record was. i'll listen to it a bit, but it's more well recorded riffery than awe-inspiring. still, it'd probably be a good live set.

I read in an interview where one of them said "we wanted to fill a void that existed in the music scene". That made me gag a little. I wish I could fill the void in my pockets by ripping off Matt Pike. Early Man are reportedly the "saviors of metal". Ugh, I hate caring about this stuff because it's so stupid but it irritates me none the less. I'm going to see Torche April 9th but I'll be leaving before The Sword go on.

jeez how is it that someone so thoroughly scene as me has not heard this early man? they must be on a hipster label that doesnt communicate with me. i am mostly in with metal labels/publicisty groups, not hipster labels with a token stoner band.

Floor were great. Torche are awesome. That record was too little of a good thing, damn it. The recent 'we are heavy metal!' crop of young bands puzzle me. I understand how they come to exist, and metal was always self-informed, but I never would expect them to become popular at all. Hammers of Misfortune are the only ones I feel deserve the recognition, and they're basically a reconfiguration of The Lord Weird Slough Feg who aren't ironic-hipster-retro-metal at all, seeing ties with Brocas Helm and all of the old US epic/power scene.

It seems the only way hipster america can enjoy good heavy metal music is if it can alleviate the guilt-by-association with postmodern 'yes, we know, lol!' irony.

I have no idea what the band Crom is about, though.

i like the sword album a lot.

but yes, these bands are just hippster bands. it's bands that make it ok for kids who don't own any real metal albums to say "hey, i like some metal bands". some of it (early man) is horrible, but some of it is pretty good (the sword, goblin cock).

and Torche is two of the dudes from Floor. and that album rips.

also, some of these bands are acutally turning some of these kids on to bands like High on Fire and shit... so... i guess that's good too.
