Kandarian Ruins
It's time for me to look for a new place to live. I have to live relatively close to a desert, and have to maintain employment (construction, computers, other gay office shit).

Tell me where to go. What is Canada's desert like. Where are my shoes for chrissake.

i've always wanted to visit the desert, and camp out

but i hate the heat, so I could never live there.

though nowadays I'm so sick of snow too

I need a place thats average ALL the time

as for your recommendation, go to canada

I love Aridzona, but I like Flagstaff a lot more than Tucson. It's not too huge, but has enough going on that finding decent work shouldn't be a problem.

Canada trip is going to happen probably around May or June, via Seattle to scope that out as well. I am really curious about the Canadian desert though. I'm not expecting the lovely 110 degree summers I'm used to, but dry desolation is good in any temp really.

canadian deserts sound like they might have great potential, I've never even considered that there's deserts in canada

other than tundras

Coastal Calfornia would fit the bill, like San Diego or San Luis Obispo. I wouldn't wish my worst enemy to live in Orange County or LA, so I won't recommend those areas.

seattle seemed perfect when I visited it .. other than the rainy season

plus I like all the variety of landscapes that are nearby, snowy mountains, shores, desert-like plains, and aren't there rainforests too? very neat

I also like variety, so when I get tired of the average weather, I can quickly go elsewhere .. but not forced to deal with it everyday

I live right next to Canada's only desert and let me tell you, it's really not that impessive.

Are you a nutso desert rat like me though? I grew up in the Mohave and visit whenever possible (although I think technically I'm still within it's boundaries, but I dunno). I'm just curious if it's unimpressive for a desert, or if you don't like the desert to begin with. Also, King Crimson rocks. :)

I was very much into isolation and wanting to live in the desert when I was your age.
But now I would recomend you move to Grenwich Village, NYC :D

You'd like that, wouldn't you... :loco:

NYC is a possibility. Not really sure I want to live in a big big city right now. But I do love SF and NYC, and could see myself living there were it not for $45,685/month apartments.

only if you lose my phone number when you are sloshed :loco:

you can always share a one bedroom with 5 asian sweatshop workers in Chinatown ... and still pay like $800 as your share :D

it's Ok though, who the hell needs to be home, when you have NYC as your backyard?

haha, you didn't save that message did you? It's cool because I've been pretty buzzed about 3 times since that night, but nowhere near that level. I have a buddy that gets that way on a weekly basis, jeez. Wait, so did I, back in college. :dopey:

I'm not very knowledgeable about deserts, but this one doesn't seem that great...although the only town in it is incredibly small and has absolutely nothing to do, so I think that affects my judgement a bit :Spin:

Also, King Crimson rocks.
I only have The Power to Believe and Lark's Tongue in Aspic, and they have so many CDs, I don't know which one to get next...what would you say is the best KC album?

I love the desert for the emptiness, I prefer the towns to be small, rundown, or nonexistent. ;)

Haha! Those are my two favorites by them. Red is widely considered their best, with In the Court of the Crimson King their classic album. http://www.elephant-talk.com has more KC information than you'll ever need, I spent a year or so gathering almost all of their discography and only two albums (Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair) I could live without. The only studio full length I'm missing is Islands, since it's supposed to be pretty bad I've been waiting to find it for cheap in the used bin.

If you want more stuff like Larks' Tongues pick up Red and/or Starless & Bible Black. If you want more Power to Believe-like material, ConstruKction of Light is essential, and then if you want their modern approach gone completely gonzo, look into the ProjeKcts boxset, which is 4 all-live all-improv discs. And a fancy box! :D

Its kinda easy to get a feel for what albums to get if you split them up into their different eras. Red is my absolute favorite, that one is from the same era as Larks'... if you like the sound of that album, I'd so go for that.

Other good choices would be Discipline, or THRAK

and of course their first album, In the Court of the Crimson King, is a classic

The way I started collecting (gotta catch 'em all!) was to get one from each era, and based on the sounds liked best , got more from that grouping. There's a cool graph showing who was on which albums somewhere on the KC website, www.elephant-talk.com

edit: durrrrrrrrr, NAD beat me to it

another edit!:

its also a good idea to pick up a DVD of theirs. KC is at their best in live settings, which some of the DVDs capture well.
