I was listening to some shit on youtube and one of the recommended songs was Baba O'Riley by The Who and I knew it as a title but had never actually heard it or remembered even if I heard it and one play later I'm hooked. I know all about Daltrey and Co but never really gave them the time of day apart from Pinball Wizard and a few of their other big songs but they had amazing songs. Daltrey's voice is amazing which I already knew but the youtube listen confirmed it. The bass playing is great as well, the guitar is surprising melodious and the drumming is very cool too. Listening to the album Who's Next on youtube and there's no hint of an average tune. Might have to buy a cheap best of Who CD on ebay or something. Any The Who fans here? This song Behind Blue Eyes is very cool with great build up to those cool Townsend riffs.

If you have netflix you can watch the Classic Album show about the making of Who's Next. One of my favorite albums from 8-track days. Saw them in concert in the late 90's....blew me away. One of the best shows I've ever been to. And I've been to a few.

I'm a huge fan. They're amazing. Townshend is one of the greatest rock songwriters of all time, and the four original members had an amazingly unique sound. Even their teeny-bopper stuff was sophisticated and brilliant.

We we're going to do Baba O Rilley in live performance class. With our instrumentation we were going have to have our 2nd guitarist do the opening key riffs with a delay (i guess?.. i know its arppegiated.. spell) and I was going to do the 2nd key parts on acoustic piano just cause we didn't have a means to arppegiate though I could sort of do it acoustically. In the end we didn't do it cause our drummer dropped or something and we had to switch our instrumentation around.

I'm learning pinball wizard on guitar and that strumming pattern is a pain to play at that speed, but I'm getting there.

a cheap best of Who CD

No offense dude, but that is offensive. I understand just getting into a band, but it's The Who. "Cheap" isn't a word to describe their music nor a CD of their Greatest Hits.

Go buy "Who Are You" for starters no matter the price. Regrets are many in life, but buying that album won't be on the list.

I love The Who but the "Who Are You" album does not click with me.

For a person getting into The Who I would recommend starting with:

Live at Leeds
Quadrophenia or Tommy
Who's Next
A Quick One

Glad to see some love for the music of My Generation (pun fully intended).

When Tommy came out in 1969, The Who were already established a huge band. Tommy didn't leave my turntable for a year!! I had to buy a new album!!

Instrumetally, they were one of the first bands that all the members could flat out play!! IMO, Keith Moon and John Entwhistle (both RIP) were the best on their instruments at the time. Pete Townsend wasn't far behind on guitar.

Their performance at Woodstock was legendary (see vid above). I didn't see them until 1983, but they still had it!!

One of the best ever!!

I know! I always hate it when I see bands like this in the Bargain Bin at Walmart. Completely offensive.
The Who are easily one of the greatest bands of all time. I got to see them in concert before Entwistle died and it was honestly the best concert I'd ever been to. It was amazing....and quite a sight to see Daltrey swing the microphone chord around, Townshend do the windmill guitar playing and Entwistle stand there like a tree, killing it on bass like it was nothing. Also, the psychodelic stage lighting and props were incredibly synched to the music which made for a fun experience. I remember, they played for like two hours or something ridiculous but never did anything off of "Tommy" which I was disappointed. Then, they came out for their encore and basically did the whole album from start to finish. Amazing.
Unfortunately, I never got to see Keith Moon play....that would have been a trip! Everyone in that band is/was so incredibly talented and creative. And I agree, watch the making of Who's Next....it will change your life. Well, maybe not, but it will defnitely shed light on your newfound appreciation for this masterpiece of a band.

My copy of Live at Leeds is hanging on my media room wall. I worked security for The Who at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh in 1989 - awesome show - especially when Daltrey lost his mic in the catwalks (more tape, Roger - always use more tape!).

Some songs they put out were cheesy, until you stop to think of how many genre periods bands like The Who and the Stones lived through, and constantly defined what "popular music" was at the time.

The concert I saw was the opposite of MetalSpice's experience - they did the entirety of Tommy FIRST - then launched into others from the catalogue.

Only 3 shows I've ever been to with no openers: Bruce Springsteen; The Who, and Simon & Garfunkle. With that type of setlist, you really do not need an opening act.

If you just want some hits, if you keep your player on random all the time, then it's probably fine. But back in The Who days...they made ALBUMS, not singles. Some people are okay with missing out on the whole album experience.

I had the same discussion with some other "oldster" folks here at work, crying about the American Idol generation. The loss of "albums" is not just in the concept albums (Tommy, The Wall, or <shudder> Kilroy was Here), but just in the ability to see where a band was at that stage in the career. The Beatles were a different band on The White Album than on Rubber Soul. Load vs. The Black Album. Buying singles on iTunes will not give you the same exposure that stacking LP's on the spindle and letting them fall did (although you only could get one side at a time that way... but I digress).

In prepping for PPUSA, I typically download album at a time, and let the whole catalog run through my ipod at work - so I can experience not only one band at a time, but also clump their work from each album together.

Yeah - bargain bin compilations of The Who are abominations to good culture.

I guess my point is can The Who simply be summarized in a 12 song bargain bin GH collection?

Absolutely true...they can't. Neither can any decent band...*but* it might get someone who only *really* knows Pinball Wizard to give them a shot, and that "12 song bargain bin GH collection" might lead to a new fan who buys everything they've ever put out.

I have seen them live three times, the best by far being with Entwistle back in the mid 90s when they did Quadrophenia.

Speaking of which, Love Reign O'Er Me is the greatest single vocal performance in rock, IMO.

but why waste the $6-$8 on a GH when you can simply buy a definitive album like Tommy, let's say for example? i will take Tommy over a GH any day of the week.
