Having never heard any other Therion cd, I cant compare it to old works, but this totally rocks. I personally love the operatic vocals and the epic sound that the band has. I have heard that some of their earlier works have all death vocals and are a lot faster than most recent releases, I would very interested to hear these as well.

I think that live this band will be either phenomal because of the beautiful orchestration or they will down right awful because they couldnt pull off the orchestration live. So lets pray that they can do it well.

Personally I am kind of surprised that this band got picked because I just cant really seem as a really good live band they dont really have any energy it is all almost laid back chillin tunes. I would like to be able to burn one down and just marinate while listening to it, but probation sees it otherwise.

Peace

ive been wondering how they will be live.. and i'm of the same opinion about how they will be too

i have secret of the runes as well as sirius b/lemuria, and the sound isn't all that different. same gothic orchestration type stuff. though i like secret better

Thats cool I will try to pick up secret. Do you like Sirius B or Lemuria better? I am about 3/4 of the way done with Lemuria and I easily like it better.

not really sure yet, havent dedicated too much time to it.. been busy feeding my newfound orphaned land addiction :headbang:

Theli was the last real album that had a lot of death vocals but they weren't real dominant. If you like the operatic vocals check out Vovin or Secret of the Runes...both excellent releases. The Rise of Sodom & Gomorah is a fantastic song and the whole Vovin CD rocks.

I saw them a few months ago and they totally rocked live!!!! Their live approach is much more straight forward and heavier, but they do use a small choir and a lead soprano together with Mats Leven. I was also sceptical about how they would sound live but they totally blew me and the entire audience away with their live sound and energy. I am confident you guys will be pleasantly surprised, especially with the excellent Earthlink sound.
All their albums since Theli have been operatic so they have been donig this for a while. Their previous albums are pretty good but I do prefer their more operatic approach...its what makes them unique.

I've got a couple of friends who have seen Therion live in Europe (either at festivals or on tour), and they said they were totally kick-ass live...and quite professional about it, too, despite the considerable production challenges (!) I expect that, like most bands, even the softer tunes will be much crunchier in a live setting. As for the harder tunes....."look ouuuuuuut!" (In my best Dio voice.)

Totally agree.

We were lucky enough to tour with Therion for a few shows last year, and they totally rock. Not in the least bit sterile live, and they are sooooo professional about it as well. You will not be disappointed! They seem have so much fun on stage as well.

Wow, cool, thanks for the "insider" info. :)

And, BTW, cool Elric avatar image there! One of Michael Whelan's artist-proofs for that book-cover image hangs in my living room, ready to scare any tourists who wander in by mistake. :D

Cool! No worries. I think that Therion will be a big hit at PPUSA. They are also, probably the nicest and most genuine band we've ever met.

Elric - will they ever make the movie? I mean, could they do it justice?

That's cool to know about Therion. I assumed that they would be kind of scary. The nicest and most genuine band I have met to date (other than bands that my friends are in) is Lacuna Coil. Andrea and Cristina are nice...Brainstorm/Tad Morose level nice. Of course, I'd be remiss not to also mention Opeth (particularly Mikael), Moonspell (particularly Fernando and Mike) and Evergrey (particularly Michael and Jonas). I guess when it comes down to it, I have met enough metal bands that were genuinely friendly to me that it reminds me why I support this scene

As for the Elric movie, I'll believe it when I see it. The producers genuinely want to stick to the darker roots of it rather than turn it into some Hollywood garbage. But...I'll just believe it when I see it.

Michael Moorcock has some crappy ideas for the actor to play the lead role. :(

I've heard a couple of choices. I heard that Brad Pitt was an option. I actually think he's a good actor who would do a solid job, but he'd really have to lose weight to make himself look not so healthy. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers has also been mentioned; I've never seen any of his films, but I think he looks the part.

Whoo-hoo! The forces of Melniboné have been successful in taking over this thread! :tickled:

Last I heard, MM was favoring Paul Bettany in the role of Elric, which would be workable, I think. He certainly has the acting range (judging from his fine work in Master and Commander) and the physical requirements (tall, lanky, thin face) for the part. Check www.multiverse.org for the latest, though, since I haven't had time to be on there lately.

And yes, Elric's cousin's band...namely Yyrkoon...does rock. :headbang:

Hmm, getting back on topic, Therion should do some sort of dark, eeeevil Elric-related tune. :D
