Thin Lizzy - Is Emerald the first battle metal song?

I don't know if it is the first, but Brocas Helm selected to cover this song at their latest european tour. So, that means something, I guess. ;)

This is, of course, totally legit and completely awesome. Thin Lizzy is just completely legendary and their influence and effect on music is undeniable. However, I feel the need to turn everyone's attention to Wishbone Ash, on their 1972 album Argus:

It predates metal by a bit, but I think you'll get what I'm saying here.

Thank you for mentioning Wishbone Ash. Argus is one of my favorites and those are 2 killer tracks! One of the first to utilize the twin lead guitars!

Love this track from the debut album too: the drummer really shreds.

I disagree. The music evokes feeling of a battle (in my opinion). It almost sounds like marching.

I mean these riffs, while awesome, can be heard in Sabbath songs, Maiden songs, Kiss songs, WASP songs, Saxon songs, Angel Witch songs, Manowar songs etc etc. Doesn't mean any of those bands sound anything like eachother though. I mean, would you really group Kiss in the same genre as Manowar and WASP?

Everyone defines genres differently and sometimes it can be tough to fit a band into one genre. I would not classify Thin Lizzy as a battle metal band though I would say their song Emerald would be one of the starting points to that genre.

Ha, awesome-- I was going to post that back-to-back bit of excellence. Those two songs never grow old.
