LOS ANGELES (AFP) - "American Wedding," the third film in the romantic comedy "American Pie" series, took the biggest slice of the North American box office action over the weekend, according to preliminary figures.

The movie, which sees teenage sweethearts head to the altar, grossed an estimated 34.2 million dollars in its debut weekend, box office-trackers Exhibitor Relations said.

Last week's leader, "Spy Kids 3D: Game Over," dropped to second place with an expected take of 20.1 million.

Johnny Depp's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" sailed into third place with 19.1 million dollars, while the underdog race horse "Seabiscuit" took fourth with 17.4 million dollars.

"Bad Boys II," the action-comedy sequel starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as a team of buddy policemen, was fifth with 12.7 million dollars.

Angelina Jolie's video game-inspired "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life" took in 11.3 million dollars for sixth place.

Disney-Pixar's animated fish story "Finding Nemo" tied with the debut of superstar couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's "Gigli" -- each earning about 3.8 million dollars.

Sean Connery's Victorian-era superheroes in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" grossed 3.1 million dollars, while Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" scored 2.9 million dollars.

Disney's two summer hits have sold more than 500 million dollars in tickets so far.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" has grossed an estimated 209.8 million dollars in US ticket sales in its four weeks in release, while "Finding Nemo" has earned nearly 320 million dollars in its 10 weeks at the box office.

Final weekend figures are due out Monday.
