Sorry for another job/career oriented thread, but I've been really curious lately. It seems like trying to tour while still making ends meet is nearly impossible. How do find job(s) that allow one tour, that pay enough while at home to take care of bills? (Insert cute little confused emoticon thingy here.)

as much as i hate starfucks, they late you leave for 3-4months before they terminate you from the company. starting pay is above min wage plus weekly tips.. i have seen plenty of people make ends meet with it as long as your hours are in the 30+ a week.

Currently I'm focusing on my AE studies at the university so I'm having a break from working, but if being totally honest, I have been on 4 tours in Finland as an engineer, all bands were on a recordlabel and on a booking agency and in 3 of those tours I made more money in the end than any of the individual bandmembers on any of those tours. In the worst gig the bandmembers made 0.83€ per member after all the expenses. :ill: I have been a freelancer audioengineer since 2005 and because I don't have a company who I work under, I can't get fired.

It's a bit strange that I work in a musical instrument store and every god damn time I have a gig/tour coming up it's an uphill struggle to get days off.
Talking to others working in other stores (competitor's), they're almost encouraged to go out and play!

Working as a radio host on weekends and also still studying. I can choose when to work, so I'm trying to work out both schedules. Keeping it balanced.

Going on tour equals lost money. Dedication keeps it going.

With all the music things that I do, I get paid every week of the year regardless of where I am in the world. I can do whatever since I have a lot of royalties, sales of instructional products, etc. I love working for myself :)

Right now I'm playing localy and run a full time job.

BUT when I was touring a lot I was a full time piano technition. Making my own schedule was a plus, especially since the summer season is usually slow.

Just in case i took my piano tuning tools with me. I called a few music stores in the area and gave them discounted rates. We also stayed in a few homes of piano owners as well. So, I got a little bit of income on the road. But, nothing major.

Right now I'm an english teacher at a school, so no free weekdays in school time, totally free in vacations. I won't be doing anymore touring for some time anyway, I'm concentrating on other stuff, and touring is fucking hard, almost impossible here, not enough audience support to tour the country, nobody wins any cash, not even organizers or bands (I've been on both sides, as a band I have had nice hotels and bus tickets payed, that's as far as it goes. as organizer, you simply lose money, never enough attendance to pay for everything). I'm also a graduating Industrial Engineer and have no idea what or where I could work as that, but it would most surely be at a corporation and that would mean strict fulltime job, so I'm pretty much fucked until I leave this shitty country and pursue another life somewhere else (which I am seriously planning on doing)
