toby - your thoughts on Mastodon...

Mastodon- I love their drummer (Brann Dailor), and I think that a good 60% of their songs are killer. At times, I would like to hear the entire band go as sick as Dailor does.. for example, the outro to the TitD album that Dailor and Mastodon's bassist played on.
I think their songwriting is their weak point, but I tend to laud them as being "fuckin awesome".

i wish it was a little more melodic... and it tends to sound a little like botch at times.

i like the mathy part of it, but sometimes it gets to be a bit much... only because it just seems like Dailor is carring the work load.

all in all i'd give it a 7 out of 10

but i knew you would have heard them, so i thought i'd get your take on it.

next album we discuss... the new Arch Enemy.... go.

just because it's nothing special- i think the gimmick of a woman sounding exactly like a man (i.e. WOW she sounds just like all the guys who do death vocals sound!) wears thin fast, as opposed to a band like Opera IX whose female vocal growls do sound like a woman executing them- and remain unique.

Also I'm not one for starightforward thrash too much. I love Mercyful Fate but Sharlee D'Angelo holds no dear place in my heart when it comes to Arch Enemy.

Brann Dailor is a fucking GOD!!
Mastodon kicked serious ass when I saw them open for Dillinger Escape Plan.
The only thing I question about Mastodon are SOME of the blues licks that we've all heard before a thousand times.
Did I mention Brann Dailor is a fucking GOD?!!!!!!

in regards to arch enemy. I think the idea of liking angela's vocals should not be thought of as a "gimmick". When I hear her voice I am not like "ooh its a woman sounding like a man" I am thinking "Holy Shit these vocals are awesome!" She rules and the songwriting is awesome on most of that album. there are some songs I find rather dull but the first 6 songs on that album are non-stop amazingness. Also the guitarists are really cool. My only complaint is the lyrics but whatever, i don't expect much lyrically from arch enemy to begin with.

They fucking rule!

Anathema: There are moments on the last record that are really good. (The last song with the ocean sounds in particular) but mostly that album sounds like a mix of everyone they covered at Milwaukee last year: Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, and Pink Floyd. All of whom I like, of course...

Alternative 4 is pretty great, even though I don't care for the drumming, which is kind of ham-handed at points. The Pink Floyd influence is pretty hard to ignore. Check out their use of delay...instant transport back to "The Wall".

Overall very worth checking out IMHO.

for me my situation with anathema is weird. Maybe its because I never heard jeff buckley or radiohead much BEFORE i had heard the last anathema album but i really really loved that album alot. Every single song was fucking amazing to me and really touched me.

And now after having heard more jeff buckley and radiohead stuff i don't really hear all that much of their stuff in it. i hear an influence but anathema to me has a very individual voice on that record. But I am stupid and probably not noticing it msot likely.

However, not to be the nitpicking asshole but I agree with Sam that the last song is definitely the best but my favorite part is when vinny sings the "drift in and out" part and as he repeats it, his voice gets furthur and furthur away but as it drifts away more harmonies are layered on top of it so by the end its a choir of vinny. For me I rate that as one of my top ten "Most Godliest Moments" in a song although it falls short of knocking off my favorite moment which is Bruce Dickinson's little harmony vocal part after the guitar solo in the song "The Alchemist." Those moments make me happier than words can describe when I hear them.

Now I will go cry myself to sleep thinking about them...
