whats everyones opinion of petty's 3 newest albums echo, last dj and highway companion?

Some decent songs on "Echoes." Haven't heard the others. My favorites by Petty are "Dam the Torpedoes" and "Wildflowers."

I just find Petty to be such an average musician...nothing really special about him.

I've not heard anything more recent than Wildflowers, so no clue.

I think if you have Damn the Torpedoes, Wildflowers and Full Moon Fever you've pretty much got the essentials covered.

Big Petty fan here. My opinions:

Echo - single best Tom Petty album of all-time, bar none.

The Last DJ - solid album. Some great songs, some average songs. Still among his best. Last DJ, Money Becomes King, Joe, Have Love Will Travel, among the best of his/their career.

Highway Companion - another very solid album. Also probably among the best with songs like Square One, Saving Grace, Down South, and This Old Town.

Although I like most of their & his albums, I think all of the later ones are by far the best, starting with Mary Jane's Last Dance in '93. If you like the earlier stuff the most then you might not like the newer stuff, but if you're favorite is something like Full Moon Fever or Wildflowers, you should like them.

thanks, i like all of his stuff that i've heard actually and any songs from a certain period haven't bothered me. i will check out echo for sure. i was leaning towards getting that anyways because "free girl now" is an awesome song and i haven't heard it on the radio in years

If anyone saw his Super Bowl set, well, it sure left a lot to be desired. Of course, those Super Bowl gigs all pretty much suck donkey balls. Mr Petty sure is gettin' old.

agreed, i was pissed most of his set was from full moon fever
