update: good show! Clearlake were a bit unimpressive, but a friend said they were better on disc and would be good in a smaller location/club (The Pageant is a huge theater with balcony- big open comfortable roomy area).
they did play a LOT from the new margerine eclipse record (like 8-9 songs) and only maybe 6 or so songs from other albums (i didn't recognize anything from cobra phases or sound dust, which was kinda disappointing as i love those records). really good sound, though. they really don't speak to the audience much, but the music was good. they had film to go with a lot of the music, too, which was really cool.
what still impresses me is the number of multi-instrumentalists they have. in the 7-person instrumentation (from what i saw):
- fem vocalist who also did trombone/synthesizer/percussion
- Simon Johns (i think?) who did brass (flugelhorn, french horn, other brass), synthesizer, and guitar (most of the time he had two instruments at hand per song)
- bassist who doubled on drums
- 2 extra guitarists/bassists
- multi-synth/keys guy
- extra constant drummer
while clearlake suffered from very limited instrumentation (basic 2-guitar/bass/vox/drums makeup with a few added pedal synth effects from the bassist) and sounded kind of thin, stereolab's sound was amazingly filled-out.

also, i picked up Imitation Electric Piano, a side project cd by Simon Johns which (so far) sounds rather like stereolab. good stuff, although with a somewhat quiet mastering job. they had several side project cds available, but i didn't have enough $$ to get them all (also, a 3" minicd for the tour with 3 bonus unreleased songs)
