Tongues.

It's obvious, it hints towards speaking in tongues. Therefore its not supposed to make any sense, as that takes out all the mystique of someone ranting in a foreign language. Think about it ;)

well, i've spent some time thinking about tongues' lyrics, so yes, i have a general idea. however, since surprises are on the way ;) i'm not going to write an analysis here. generally speaking, i think it's about natural language, the structures in our mind that allow us to understand and formulate language, and their relation with side-effects of language such as emphasizing (war) or trying to overcome a distance (love). it also features a first approach with the duality issue typical of projector, haven and dd, implying that there is a world of names and there is a world of beings. they also seem to grow apart from one another throughout evolution.
i think it ought to be read alongside with atom heart 243.5 in order for it to make more sense.

the most controversial lines so far are - of course - the following:

the red-squared patterns
dragonrise and evenclaw
decoying from pandemonic symmetry

i'd like to hear your opinion on this passage, possibly one of the most cryptic niklas has ever written.
i think one thing should catch your eye at first sight. we're discussing tongues and the elements in the second verse look scrambled: dragonclaw and evenrise sounded like the obvious choice to me there...
anyone cares to elaborate?

btw, i haven't the slightest idea of what tongues' lyrics are about and, honestly, i don't like the song so much.

is that decoying or decaying? I'd of thought decaying makes more sense...

I agree with the scrambled thing, it looks like Niklas is trying to show things mingling... red-squared patterns could be mosaics, yet red and patterns suggest barbaric cultures... the civilised and the primitive in us coming together...

good question... according to the booklet there's an "o" there, and it seems to me mikael actually sings it as "decoying". of course, we know how this can be absolutely irrelevant. ;)
i'll try to ascertain the truth through some nonchalant questions. :p

also: patterns = nomad years, silent caravans; red-squared = chess, two factions, dragonrise/evenclaw.
