On a day dominated by the likes of Green Day, Weezer and reconfigured Sex Pistols, it was the underworld (albeit under sunlight) that shone brightest. Despite being the first band on, at 1 PM, Carcass delivered a wake-up call (in some cases, literally, for the adjoining campsite).
Spiky silver haired bassist, Jeff Walker, in white button down shirt, looked more like a financier, on holiday, than the frontman for one of the classic death metal outfits. While better known for fronting Slash, as part of Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, the former Mayfield Four singer/guitarist reverted to his roots, offering solo material, as a trio.
By far the best (to BraveWords’ ears) band of the day was Eternal Evil, shoehorned into an uncredited stage that had heretofore only presented interviews and discussions. The young thrashers give a nod to the ‘80s Teutonic scene (blurring the lines between thrash and early black metal), but with technical guitar ability that seemingly belies their ages. Great to finally witness them live!
Here’s some images from Thursday. A full report will be posted soon. Enjoy!
