On the day when local legends Dimmu Borgir introduced their new guitarist to the world, all else failed to compare, although there was plenty to see/hear elsewhere. Finntroll offered a unique blend of humppa black/pagan metal, under the tented Moonlight stage. Poppy drew a large crowd, out of curiosity.
A new addition, this year, is the seldom used (apart from interviews) Storm stage (inside the craft beer tent), which played host to the hard rock sounds of Star Gazer. Back out in the sunlight (Hell, the sun almost never sets this time of year!) Steel Panther returned to Tons with a repertoire of off-color jokes and ‘80s inspired originals (with just as dirty lyrics).
The reunited Ugly Kid Joe had the unenviable task of playing opposite Dimmu (who sounded and looked great). Maybe it was his 6 year old son, seeing Dad onstage for the first time, but Shagrath was more talkative than usual (albeit in his native tongue).
The final metal band of the evening was Exodus, on the smallest of the three main stages. They came out swinging, hitting with the big guns right away: “Bonded By Blood”, then “Piranha”. Wow!
