Yay! 2003 picture thread gets a friend. Woohooo!!!!!

I have El Cielo, but I have yet to listen to it. Maybe now is the time.

LMAO. What did you expect? Their music is nature related, and their music is bleak. I really don't know what you want. Would you care to elaborate?

I think I need to pick up Oceanic. Everyone raves about it. I've heard two tracks, and I thought they were just okay. Maybe it's a grower.

Oceanic is not a "song" album. It's a fucking album that you have to listen to from start to finish, or you don't listen to it. And if you hate Neurosis, don't bother. Personally, I think it's better than anything Neurosis has done, but I love Neurosis as well. Celestial by Isis is another great album, but not as good as Oceanic.

Hmm... maybe I should lay off then. What little Neurosis I've heard was remarkably boring, but I did enjoy the Isis I've heard much more.

I worship ISIS, Oceanic is by VERY far my favorite album of 2002 but compared to Neurosis, they're nothing IMO.

Someone please explain to me the appeal of Neurosis. From what I've heard, they like to play the same riff for about 2 minutes at a time while uninteresting drum patterns play at 0.5 BPM.

I can't say what exactly is Neurosis, nobody can; the same way nobody can describe precisely what the truth is. Words are so limited when it comes to Neurosis discussion and every die-hard fans are well-aware of that.

Anyway, here's the best description I've seen concerning them:
http://www.neurosis.com/biography.html

Also, some folks here (including myself) trying (in vein), to describe just how powerful Neurosis is:

hope it helps.

Neurosis are probably my favorite band.... I agree that they are very hard to describe what makes them so great. Each album feels slightly different, and they are all masterpieces. I'll describe all their albums except the first 3 (the first two are very different, I heard they are just hardcore punk albums, and I've only heard a couple songs off their 3rd album, I'm gonna get it as soon as I can! their albums are so hard to find....)

"Enemy of the Sun" is VERY heavy, and sludgy sounding with a lot of power.... atmosphere is the key word in these albums, and there is a ton of tribal-esque drumming on this album.

"Through Silver in Blood" is just as heavy as "Enemy" but this one seems to have a much more scary vibe to it.... a lot more sound effects are used, and the songs are longer and trance inducing. It also ends with probably the darkest song I have ever heard. A masterpiece.

"Times of Grace" is a bit more raw, a bit less sound effects and ambience (of course there is still plenty of that to go around) but this one is their heaviest. Crushing riffs all around, with the usual Neurosis vibe.

And finally, their masterpiece "A Sun that Never Sets" is not only their best album, but my favorite album of all time.... this one's slightly different, this time there is a lot more quiet sections.... this one is just plain depressing and doomy in many places. The heavier parts have an oppresive and hopeless feel to them too.

Well its pretty much impossible to describe the power of this band in words, but thats just a little bit. Phew!
