I mean, clearly they're rooted in metal, but really, they just haven't been in soooo long.

I think prog metal, I think Symphony X, or even Pain of Salvation, as much as I can't stand them. Hell, Opeth is prog metal at this point.

Mike Portnoy, Nicko McBrain, Joey Jordison, Rick Allen...in random order.

Def Leppard aren't a heavy metal band, haven't been for about 25 years. Although Rick Allen is a good drummer.

Daray and Doc (RIP) from Vader are a couple of my favourite metal drummers.

I'd say their last metal album was High N' Dry - that was 1981.
Hysteria is still their peak though and is up there with Appetite as the greatest of mid-late 1980's heavy rock music.

I give them credit for Pyromania, it still retains enough metal to warrant inclusion IMO.

There are some nice metallic riffs on Rock Rock, Die Hard, Stagefright etc (fuck, how good is that album!) but the polish on it makes me think of it more as a hard rock album. Whatever, it's a classic either way
