Tori Amos

I think she has a good sound but generally I prefer artists like Regina Spektor and Fiona Apple. I love Tori's version of Smells Like Teen Spirit though.

I've been listening to "Little Earthquakes" quite a bit the last 2-3 days & I really dig it. She has some great vocal lines & a sweet ethereal voice. Some of the melodies are even pretty decent.

I've never heard of Regina Spektor... I've been wanting to look more into Foina Apple for a long time as well. The stuff I've heard from Tori I like much better though, although it is different.

What's a good Fiona album? Maybe I'll try to look into some more female artists soon, but for now I'm hung on Tori.

Extraordinary Machine is my favorite Fiona album. Very much a more matter-of-fact vocal style than Tori's elaborate expressions, for better or worse.

Regina Spektor is kinda cool. Check out the song Apres Moi or Prisoners, or Daniel Cowman.

There's one thing that I think is crazy about Tori, & I can't pinpoint how she does this. Everything on "Little Earthquakes" is so memorable. I've been humming the songs. The thing is that those songs are only built around soft piano meodies. Most of the songs are the same in structure & they even all sound similar, but many of them are hummable & memorable nonetheless. It's not like you get a big guitar riff or keyboard solo that sets the mood for the song, the entire album is based off her voice. I couldn't believe that Rabbit in the Moon used a sample for one her songs. Her voice has so much emotion & is very soothing to the ears.

I've got nearly all of her studio albums, but I'd say she's best when performing live. My favourite album of her is a bootleg titled "Saint And Sinner", featuring a part of her concert in Berlin in 1996, where she was only accompanied by her guitarist. An official release nearly twice as long and similar in style is her "Live From NY"-videotape. I don't know if it has been released on DVD yet, but I definitely like it better than her "Welcome To Sunny Florida"-DVD.

So if you were going to buy ONE DVD of hers which one would you buy??

Well, there isn't much too choose from, because the only DVD featuring a live concert seems to be "Welcome To Sunny Florida". Well, there's just been a new release featuring some old live-stuff, titled "Live at Montreux 1991/1992" - check this link for further information. I haven't bought it yet, so I can't tell you what I think of it. Since it seems you like Tori's early stuff very much, you might like it better than "Welcome To Sunny Florida". It seems that "Live From NY" is only available on videotape, thus unless you've got a video-recorder (or know someone who can transfer it on DVD), you won't be able to view it.

I'd say it's less piano-oriented than her first albums, maybe with the exception of "Scarlet's Walk", which is overall a rather quiet album.

The studio album I've listened to the most is "From The Choirgirl Hotel". On it's successor "To Venus And Back" you find hardly any clean piano-parts, but mostly electronic (if this is the right word) sounds. Actually, it's a double album. In addition to a studio album you get Tori's fist official live-CD featuring mostly songs from her first three albums. Most of the live versions sound more or less different from the original studio versions, maybe also due to the fact that Tori likes to improvise when playing live. E.g. the live version of "Waitress" is more than 9 minutes long.

Her last two albums "The Beekeeper" and "American Doll Posse" are more heterogeneous than their predecessors and in my opinion they are, just like "Scarlet's Walk", too long, i.e. I find it somewhat tiring to listen to the entire albums in one go. I like "American Doll Posse" better than its predecessors, maybe also because it features some of Tori's most rocking songs ("Teenage Hustling", "Body And Soul"), which doesn't mean the softer songs are bad.

I think you find uncountable live-clips of Tori on youtube, but since Tori's live versions can sound very different from the studio versions of her songs, it might be difficult to tell whether you'll like the studio versions as well or not.
