I'm not sure I agree with them, but I guess for a riff to be considered great, it has to be popular. That said, I haven't even heard of half of these.

Not a great list but probably not as bad as I would expect. Some of the stuff higher up could be top 10 or 20 to make it better. Some bands also seem to have songs that aren't the ones I would have picked.

where is any Opeth or Iron Maiden (the opening rift to The Wicker Man)?

a lot that can be cut for that list and be replaced by other things far superior

I would add more Audioslave and put Cochise much higher, like top 5. More Mastodon. Some Dark Tranquillity. Marilyn Manson.

Others on the list should be higher also.

Dark Eternal Night seems an interesting choice for DT and to be so high. I would rate many of their songs/riffs higher, but meh.

Going by most of the other choices I'd say they've tried too hard to make the "we're not just picking the obvious classics by each band" point by instead going for the "we're proving our street cred by actively avoiding any obvious or classic songs by each band but still picking classic bands because we want to still have name-drop appeal".

AC/DC, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, all songs off newest albums, and none of which I'd consider even amongst the top 10 riffs by the respective bands let alone top 50 ever.
