Today, 16th May is the 65th Anniversary of one of the most famous raids of world war II.
In 1943, the RAF's 617 Squadron set out to destroy three dams in Germany's Ruhr valley. They managed to breach two, giving a boost to Britain's war effort.
19 AVRO Lancaster Aircraft left England and headed towards the German heartland. A service will be held today to remember the 8 Aircraft and 53 Crew who gave their lives in this daring mission.
In a further tribute a Lancaster bomber will fly three times over Derwent Reservoir in Derbyshire, which was used by the original pilots to train ahead of their famous raid. Squadron Leader Les Munro, the last surviving pilot from the mission which was codenamed Operation Chastise, will be a guest of honour.
I salute our heros.
Now if IM would write a song about the Dambusters it would be cool.
