Has any prog or power metal band ever performed a cover of Toto's "Africa?" Some will scream at the suggestion, but I think it could be done well.

In 1986 my parents bought a Mercury Grand Marquis, and as a token of their appreciation, Ford Motors gave us a complimentary cassette tape featuring currents hits. I was 5 or 6 at the time, but Toto's Africa was on there and it was my favorite song for the longest time.

Therefore, I would completely support a metal cover of Africa! Great idea!

Good GOD I HATE that song! Maybe PoS could do a cover of it, and I could hate THEM more!
Reason: At that time, while Rocky was still Tadpole Stew, (lol)
I was working as a medical courrier running around the hospitals in the Chicagoland area, picking up everything from tumors, blood, abortion samples, you name it. The vehicles were supplied by the company (SmithKline) and they only had AM radios. The only station I could remotely handle listening to was WLS, and it sucked BAD. One day, I literally heard that song over 20 times in an 8 hour period. It had the accelerated effect that Led Zepplin had on me in highschool. Absolute, complete, utter burnout.
There was another tune as well, maybe it was Men At Work, that got so overplayed, I nearly became ill each time I heard it.....

J-Dubya - took years to appreciate the non-radio friendly Toto stuff.....

Excellent story Dubs. I love the way this thread started, and I love the direction it's going.

I've considered covering that in Odin's Court before, but the other guys would think I was crazy. o_O I used to cover it in a band in college though.

One of my favorite songs. Great vocal work, and the keys in that song are killer.

I was never a Toto fan.... About 3 years ago my brother talked me into seeing them,
(HOB-New Orleans-$16); I was FLOORED! What a tight group, cool harmonies, great
guitarist, and what a singer! One of the best I've ever heard live. Having always dismissed
them as too pop, I was now a new fan.

That's great that you have a new appreciate of them. They were actually all VERY talented studio musicians. It's definitely one of the most talented classic groups out there. Yes, vocals are definitely a strong point, but they are all so amazing!

Wow, Toto. That's a blast from the past. Was that the song that went, " I (felt?) the rains down in AAAAAAfricaaaaa....." or something like that? Hard to hear metal in there. I think I'd rather hear "Hold The Line" with death vocals. Another song beaten to death by AM radio. I remember that pain too, JDub.

The band PYOGENESIS does a cover of Africa. It's heavy and melodic and I love it!! It has a hint of techno on the opening drums, but otherwise, it's a winner for this fan of Toto's "Africa"!

Hey now - don't be getting down on our boy Rick!
I suggested it as a cover once to our band too.... (ducks!)

it was that or "Land of Confusion" by Genesis...too bad really, Distrubed beat us to that one.

I was burned out on "Africa" long ago, it's the only Toto song you'll hear on the radio to this very day where I'm from. But, it's got sentimental value from my childhood, so it's a bitter pill I like to swallow now and then. :saint:

If anyone should own a TOTO album, they must own Isolation. That is the best Toto album...ever! Next to Tabmu and Kingdom of Desire.

Good question, and I forgot to address this in my original post. Does anyone know what the chorus is? Even when you look online, the lyrics vary from lyrics site to lyrics site.

BTW, I really don't like Toto that much. Some of their songs I find intensely annoying, but I always liked "Africa" with it's pseudo-mystical flavor. It was stuff like that in my childhood that opened me up to more atmsopheric music later on, like The Gathering and Dead Can Dance (!).

Toto mixed Bostonish polished arena rock with...Crosby Stills and Nashesque type harmony vocals and a wee bit of the folk style. It was a cool combination. There are better songs (some radio hits, some not) Toto performed I like better though.

The new album Falling In Between is the best thing they have ever done.

3.I saw Toto live 8 days ago and they were phenomenal.....wasn't a huge fan going into the gig but definately left one...best live vocal performances (harmony wise) i've seen...and Bobby Kimball can still belt it out.....
Roseanna was my fave song.

As for being great studio musicians....check out Lukathers dicography
