2 Minutes to Midnight is a reference to the famous Doomsday Clock which intellectuals and Atomic Scientist use to illustrate how close we are to a Nuclear War. For instance after the invasion of Iraq and the recent tensions between USA and N.Korea, the minute hand on the Doomsday Clock has been moved 5 minutes closer to Midingt(Midnight=nuclear war). The song itself deals with the fate of the world being in the hands of greedy, war mongering goverments. I believe the actual song is supposed to be told through the eyes of a mercenary hired out to such a warmongering nation.
