I have made a number of software purchases from companies based in the U.S recently . I was wondering if anyone in the UK has managed to reclaim the equivalent of UK VAT from these types of purchases or if that is even possible ?

If you purchase within the state itself (and there are efforts to change this as online retailers do have an advantage over local shops because of it), you will in all but 5 states be charged a sales tax. That said, it's nothing like the 17% or 21% you'll be charged in the EU for VAT - the highest sales tax in the US is in South Carolina at 10.5%, with most others being between 6% and 8%.

Thought as much , just wishful thinking on my part . I can probably off set the purchases as a business expense anyway .
