Ultralord - We Hate You and Hope You Die
Devil Doll Records - 2006
By Adam McAuley
Abrasive sludgy metal with painfully high pitched vocals is what's on offer here and the band do a decent job at performing it. Vocalist Bahb Branca is a certainly a standout, but not necessarily a highlight. They add an angsty charm to the music that is often known for having this type of vocals. An almost insane amount of distortion also characterizes the band's sound.
Overall, we have an album that is more static than the sounds of Soilent Green, but equally dirty sounding although that can be a bonus for fans of the style. There are a number of breakdowns to top off their sound, giving it that quality that makes you stutter and throws you off guard. However, I believe the band is at least second tier to some contenders such as Rwake, who manage to make slightly more interesting music to back up their raucous sound. Instead, what we're left with is a band that puts in a few cool twists and turns from time to time, but keeps their sound fairly grounded at a sludgy tempo for the most part.
Ultralord work best for someone looking to fall into the dirges of a headbanging environment, but not go much beyond that. The sludge metal genre is not one highly occupied, however, so any additions are more than welcome by all means. The band are entertaining and digestible, but they lack much of a distinguishable quality that would make them appealing on repeated listens. Thus they fit into the category of getting a recommendation for huge fans of the genre, but not much beyond that.
5.5/10
