'Underhead' micing from Gearslutz

Saw this thread on Gearslutz, thought it was interesting, and the result is killer. Done by the dude who did the latest Slash album, which has an awesome drum sound. I'm definitely going to try this type of mic'ing out.

Never used figure 8's for that, looks pretty interesting!
I've recorded quite some stuff with underheads instead of overheads and use 'em live a lot too.

less snare, but more toms and kick. I just think it looks a lot better.

Any drummers care to weigh in on what it's like to play a kit miced like this?

maybe im crazy but it looks like it might be uncomfortable, especially when reaching for the ride bell.
