Unearthly Trance
Season of Séance, Science of Silence
Rise Above 2003
By Nathan Pearce
Fans of both black metal and doom pay attention! Unearthly Trance is a band that should appeal very much to both genres. Black metalers beware, though they dont have blast beats, and in fact, they play pretty slowly. Doomers beware, though the vocals are pretty raspy, and the music is grim and raw as hell. Keep reading.
A few years ago a sub genre of doom, which I call blackened doom, was starting (most notably with Khanate). However, do not equate Unearthly Trance with Khanate. Unearthly Trance has the same doom vibe that Khanate and the like also use, but Unearthly Trance is more of a black metal band in the sense that they are creating a grim and raw atmosphere. The music is usually slow to medium paced (there is actually a beat, unlike Khanate). The production is totally raw. Think of a slightly more modern Darkthrone production. In fact, Darkthrone has to be a major influence on these guys. The recording has that same live feel that Transylvanian Hunger has.
While this album should appeal most to doomers because of its relatively slow pace, I really hope black metal fans (as well as all metal fans) will give them a chance. After all, Burzum rarely played much, if any, faster than Unearthly Trance.
This is easily one of 2003s best releases. Unearthly Trance is a band that has taken two styles of music and melded them seamlessly. This is truly a band to pay attention to in years to come.
