Urgehal – Goatcraft Torment

Whoa look! Another black metal band from Norway! Norway is known for putting out massive quantities of black metal. Sure there have been a lot of classics, but there’s a lot of crap too. Urgehal is somewhere in the middle. Goatcraft Torment stays firmly on the beaten path, with a style that combines the groove of Carpathian Forest and the grim intensity of Darkthrone. But while it’s an overplayed style, the riffs are solid. The title track is an intense battery of near death metal technicality that reminded me of Marduk’s World Funeral. But that’s about as far as it strays from the classic black metal sound. Most of the album is straightforward Darkthrone worship.
Lyrically the album doesn’t stray from the norm either. The first lyric of the album is the typical battle cry “This is satanic black metal”. Gee, how original!
Although their sound is nothing but a rip off of every Norwegian black metal band EVER, they do a good job at it. So if you like that typical black metal sound, this album is for you. But if you’ve grown tired of the same rehashed riffs played by countless bands since the 2nd wave started, I’d pass on this one.
