So, The Snow Patrol. On a metal site. Hmmmm, dont stop reading quite yet, because whether or not you like the band is fairly irrelevant, as this is singer Gary Lightbodys mix CD. Hence it has none of his own music on it! The lengthy track-list is as follows:
Low & Spring Heel Jack Way Behind
Emperor Machine Expanding In Reproduction
Sir Drew My Sex
Machines Everywhere
TV On The Radio Staring At The Sun
Dark Room Dubs Submergible
The Knife Heartbeats (Rex The Dog Mix)
Four Tet Everything Is All right
Alan Braxe / Fred Falke Love Lost
Kojak You Cant Stop It
Smith n Hack To Our Disco Friends
Seelenluft (feat. Jim Reid) I Can See Clearly Now
Secret Machines Road Leads Where Its Led
Mylo Drop The Pressure
Jacknife Lee Fear Of Nothing
Sex In Dallas Everybody Deserves To Be Fucked (Tomcats in Tokyo Mix)
Feist Shaboom
The Shins Weird Divide
Cocorosie By Your Side
Husky Rescue Rainbow Flows
Bill Withers When Im Kissing My Love
Hot Chip Take Care
The Fiery Furnaces Bow Wow
Deerhoof Milking
The Duke Spirit Cuts Across The Land
Rilo Kiley With Arms Outstretched
Joy Zipper Christmas Song
Republic of Loose Girl Im Gonna Fuck You Up
Harco Pront Sleaze
Mum Green Grass Of Tunnel
Iain Archer Does This Have A Name
Nina Nastasia - Superstar
Im not ashamed to say with that many acts, spread over two discs, I dont know the majority of the artists, and Im assuming most readers on this webzine will be in a similar position. So lets ignore the names for a minute. What we have here is an eclectic, laid back mix; some tracks are soft-house/electronica, while others range through rock moments and more organic sounds, to pure indie. As such, this mix has obviously been carefully constructed, with each track chosen for a reason. Standouts include the relaxed, unforgettable Everything Is Alright by Four-Tet, and Deerhoofs eccentric, ever changing Milking. With such a variety of tunes, skilful mixing is a necessity, and sometimes Lightbody succeeds. Yet, unsurprisingly, some of the transitions on the mix are less than perfect. The resulting disjointed feel gives character, however, and suits the chosen music well, for the most part.
Through the course of The Trip there is a progression, from more upbeat tunes to a late-night, headphones and lights-out feel by the end. Hence this release is a very good introduction to all the featured artists, as well as standing as a successful mix album in its own right, and comes highly recommended. A lovingly constructed, well-crafted mix.
