Venom

Curious you mention them. I just got Sodom early albums and they have a most definitive Venom vibe, to the point I recorded along in a tape. Venom is probably the only black metal (in the true sense) band I like and one of the very few with harsh vocals I can stand.

I was not a fan of Venom back in the 80's but I've since come to like them.
What is the DVD (Hell at Hammersmith 1985(dvd))? Any good?

Venom always reminds of the days in the 80's when a few people were up in arms of the so called 'Satanic Music' of the day such as KISS, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath. I took my share of 'shite' because of it. When an 'unknown' band like 'Venom' were singing songs like '(We are) In League with Satan'

I never understood it...

I was a big Venom fan growing up. Up through Possessed anyway. There are some great lost tracks too, like Senile Decay (which I got on something called From Hell To The Uknown - a compliation) etc. Anyway, I still own the must haves, though admittadly I don't listen to them much anymore.

I'm glad you can at least go in a store and find VENOfuckinM again. For a long time their material had dissapeared around here. Thanks to NEAT RECORDS NWOBHM classic with bonus tracks. I have new Possessed and Black Metal CD's. I also found the Earmark 180 gm vinyl reissue of Welcome To Hell a couple of years ago at Magnolia Thunderpussy in Columbus, OH. Electric Wiz? Deadhead who still embraces Metal? Wsup? I think we are a rarity! :loco: :headbang:

my first ever concert in 1983 (Metallica opening) and a very chaotic one... those guys weren't very good musicians but they sure could put a hell of a nice live show...

fav album : Possessed
fav song : Warhead

I've got a couple of Venom disks... but I fail to see what's so special about them. Tunes are decent, but nothing that I'd want to listen to every day. Are they one of those bands that are more influential than they are proficient?

Hell at Hammersmith 1985 is very good dvd. Maybe the one of the best Venom gigs.

Not really considered BM... if they are is only because they named one of their albums BM ... but the style is way different on their albums.. there influence on BM bands is really just the name Black Metal and the satanic lyrical influence... other then that I would say Bathory is more of the first BM band in musical style... but i like Venom anyways...

I agree totally with DG, to me they are NWOBHM by time frame and the true sense of what Black Metal should have been, and not what it had become.

oh don't make me grow hair on you Wyvern till u become a Chiapet lol .. :loco: ... anyways BM bands after Venom were good Wyvern and took it to a new level.. Venom were essentially a primitive thrash band... only their ideological lyrics were BM and even that weren't so BM because they admitted they only did it for the shock value at the time and to differeniate themselves from other band's at the time.. anyways if you don't have any BM CD's after Venom Wyvern and others.. try some of them out.. if only the most popular bands...

Bathory (first five albums and the Nordland albums though they were viking metal by the Nordland albums)
Darkthrone (first 3 albums)
Emperor (first two albums)
Mayhem (first album though the vocals are awful and the Chimera album)
Immortal (any really)
Satyricon (volcano album.. not sure about their other albums.. havent purchased any yet but will sometime in the near future)

to name a few

Yeah Wyvern, you should pick up some growlin', screechin', blast beat music. You will love it. :)
