’90s archive drum cam footage of Vinnie Paul performing the classic Pantera song “Mouth For War”, personally filmed by late Megadeth drummer, Nick Menza, in Netherlands during the 1992 “Countdown To Extinction” tour when Pantera opened for Megadeth, can be seen below.
Bits and pieces from this era of Menza’s personal VHS tape collection will seve as a bonus feature, included in the family authorized documentary, This Was My Life: Nick Menza’s Metal Memories With Megadeth And Beyond, Blu-ray/DVD release offering a special glimpse into a pivotal moment in metal history.
The resurfacing of the unreleased live drum cam footage of Vinnie Paul performing “Mouth Of War” from 33 years ago serves as a poignant reminder of the legendary drummer’s unmatched talent and the impact he had on heavy metal music. This nostalgic glimpse into Pantera’s electrifying live performances not only celebrates Vinnie’s enduring legacy but also resonates with fans who cherish the band’s powerful sound during their peak years.
In the late 1980s, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth offered Dimebag Darrell a guitar player position, but Darrell declined, stating he would only join if his brother, Vinnie Paul, could play drums as well, which was not possible as Megadeth had already hired Nick Menza.
Vinnie Paul and Nick Menza were prominent drummers in the heavy metal scene, known for their work with iconic bands Pantera and Megadeth, respectively. Vinnie Paul, co-founder of Pantera, contributed to the band’s aggressive sound and was instrumental in their rise to fame in the 1990s, showcasing his powerful drumming in albums like Vulgar Display Of Power. Nick Menza, who played with Megadeth during a key period in the late 1980s and 1990s, brought a unique style and technical prowess to albums such as Rust In Peace. Both drummers left an indelible mark on the metal genre before their untimely deaths, with fans continuing to celebrate their legacies.
The Pantera and Hellyeah drummer passed away on June 22, 2018 at his home in Las Vegas at the age of 54. The drummer’s death “did not appear suspicious,” according to the official report of the event recorded by Metropolitan Police officers. Sources close to Vinnie told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he suffered a “major heart attack,” but that information has not been corroborated yet by an official source.
Late in the evening on May 21, 2016, Nick Menza collapsed after suffering a heart attack during a concert behind his drum kit with Chris Poland and Robertino “Pag” Pagliari in their band OHM: at The Baked Potato in Studio City, California and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner said Menza died of hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
Nick rightfully earned his place as one of heavy metal’s fiercest drummers during Megadeth’s 10-year commercial peak. The highlight of his career, Nick said, was playing Rock In Rio before more than 100,000 people. The lowest point was being fired by Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine while he was still in a hospital bed after surgery to remove what doctors feared was a cancerous growth.
BayView Entertainment, in partnership with Ellefson Films and Screaming Butterfly Entertainment, have announced a second event for the Nick Menza documentary, This Was My Life, Nick Menza’s Metal Memories With Megadeth And Beyond.
