VIOLIN SHREDDING

This is amazing, but I didn't hear 13 notes per second!!

That "Flight of the Bumblebee" was pretty fast, but 13 notes a second isn't much to people that listen to metal.

Do the math: 13 * 60 = 780 notes a minute. This would be 780 beats per minute if he were playing quarter notes. Let's assume they were 16ths, so that puts him at 195bpm. Petrucci hits sixteenth notes at 208 or 216 on his "Rock Discipline" video, and many metal bands play on these tempi for minutes. Metal listener's ears are more used to hearing speed. When I was studying classical bassoon, it took hours to get "The Marriage of Figaro" to 168 (which I believe is the unwritten requirement for most professional bassoonists), which is about the speed of an average metal song.

Albeit, it's much harder to play fast on violin because the bow is nowhere near as easy to control than a pick. And this video is more credence to the fact that the violin is my favorite sounding instrument.

YES, YES, YES! I saw Earthen Grave for the first time a couple of weeks ago at the Pentagram show in Chicago, this chick is f***ing incredible! Please give these guys & gal props folks, this is Ron Holzner's (Trouble veteran) latest project and it is killer, Rachel riffs the violin right along with the guitars, pick up their demo if you can get your hands on it, well worth it.

Hmm, looked to me like the violinist in John's video post was about as fast as the guy on CNN, at least for a few seconds. :kickass:

I'm gonna have to throw this 13 note/second gauntlet down to my violinist friend Paul Mercer; he is ridiculously talented. :D
