Voodoo Tones, the red hot new rockabilly project featuring ex-Headcat alumni Danny B. Harvey, Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats) and Djordje Stijepovoc (Tiger Army), plus CM Wolf of The Delta Bombers, emerge today with a new single, the tumultuous rockabilly stomp, “Livin’ Ain’t Easy”. Stream/download the single here, and listen below.
Originally written by Wolf following his departure from the Deltas Bombers, the song was completed last year after Harvey got in touch, suggesting they work together.
Harvey explains, “I’ve been a fan of Chris Moinichen, aka CM Wolf, since I first heard his voice booming out of a stereo on a recording by his band the Delta Bombers. Chris sounded to me like a cross between Howling Wolf and Elvis Presley, one of the most soulful rockin’ voices I’d ever heard.
“First thing we did was finish ’Livin’ Ain’t Easy.’ Then we wrote a new song together, ‘Come On Let’s Dance’, and lastly worked out the arrangements for two iconic covers we both loved, ‘Sinister Purpose’ by CCR and ‘Break on Through’ by The Doors.
It was the perfect opportunity, too, for Harvey to reconvene Headcat, the shortlived but gloriously savage collaboration with Motörhead’s Lemmy that tore so many ears apart back in 2020. “Right away, I sent our demos to Slim Jim Phantom to ask him to play drums and to Djordje Stijepovoc to get him on the bass; they both loved what we were doing and the Voodoo Tones were born!
“I think you’ll agree that CM Wolf is a new, exciting voice in Rockabilly & Roots music, and the Voodoo Tones are the perfect alchemy of blues, rock’n’roll & rockabilly. It’s an honor and a privilege to be part of this EP.”
“To paraphrase Lemmy: ‘We are the Voodoo Tones and we play Rock’n’Roll!’”
Voodoo Tones hope to be on the road soon. In the meantime, however, Slim Jim will be touring this spring, including a number of shows sharing the bill with Belouis Some and Cleopatra labelmates, Gene Loves Jezebel.
