Two(!) Terry Pratchett characters are in the running for best literary character 2008. VOTE FOR VIMES! Or Rincewind. Shadow from Gaiman's American Gods is even in the running. But for the love of all you may or may not believe in, PLEASE don't vote for Edward Cullen. Twilight needs to die.

Atticus Finch should win this and it's hard not to vote for him but I can't vote against Pride and Prejudice. It's a shame they used the ugly 2005 movie poster.

And this one which is pretty spoilerish so I'll just link to it. http://i43.tinypic.com/20ado39.jpg

My absolute favorite charter of all time is Drizzt Do' Urden. You just cant get anymore baddass that him, period. Which of course he would never be on a list like that

You've obviously never read the any Elric books. His sword eats men's souls man. That beats an astral panther (no matter how huge) any day.

...I can't believe that Edward is even ON that list. Seriously, how can he even compare to some of those on there? Dorian Gray should have made it, not Edward...

Me, I voted for Heathcliff.

My immediate choice (given the options) is Shadow from American Gods. Dorian Gray would have been a nice addition to the list. Since Cullen made it, that tells me he'll win just because of the current popularity of the Twilight book/series/whatever, and not because he is the best character. "He's just so dreamy *sighs*" :Puke: Lestat ftw, kthnxbai.

And just for the fun of it, my favorite literary character is Acheron Parthenopaeus from Sherrilyn Kenyon's books. Yes, I know I keep talking about her and that series just like the little Twilight girls gush over what'shername, but at least Kenyon's books have substance, deep character development, and intricate plot lines.

Anyway, thanks for the link. I will love it if a much more worthy character than Cullen wins, but I bet I'll be disappointed.

Jibrille, that comic is great!

Elric FTW. He's not on the list either, right?

But, I'd take a pair of Drizzt's uber-cool scimitars. :notworthy
I almost bought the remaining one of a pair, commissioned from my blacksmith/boss Zak. The original commission fell through and one of the two scimitars sold quickly. The other scim ended up at our booth at Georgia Faire, as a one-of-a-kind item for $400...and we were awestruck at how awesomely it hefted. I vowed that I'd buy it after the second weekend of the Faire if it hadn't sold to a customer...and of course some lucky bastard nabbed it that last Sunday. :) :erk:

+1 and I agree about Acheron. Far and away the best "new" character I discovered in 2008.

Vote cast for Sam Vimes.

If nominations were still open, I'd probably have nominated Frodo Baggins, whose courage and determination are just about unequalled in 20th century literature.

I think the list is based on most read characters of '08.
So then how does American Gods figure into that? Was there a reissue in '08 that I'm unaware of?

I can't recall (and am not going to sift through the Now Reading thread), have you finished Acheron? I've appreciated him from his little heroic appearances in other novels, but after reading his story I have a whole new impression and fondness for the character. I was so busy with Kenyon's books in '08 that I didn't discover any other characters outside of her series that were worthwhile. C'est le vie!

Yeah, I agree about the character completely. I finished Acheron a while ago -- easy to see why it was St. Martin's Press's biggest release of the year -- and I also read the first book in the D-H series since then. http://jet13.hasweb.com/~paulcas/curr-boo.html#finished
