When someone thinks about doom metal, the greats such as Revelation, Black Sabbath, Solstice, and Saint Vitus come to mind, but Reverend Bizarre needs to be mentioned as well because of their immense sound, approach to doom, opera-ish vocals, and unique melodies. What does Reverend Bizarre have to do with Wandering Midget? Quite a bit, actually. Wandering Midget is a band that takes a great deal of ideas from Reverend Bizarre, but they expand upon them in a innovative way. This is done by focusing on their unique melodies and opera-ish vocals. Never once, does Wandering Midget have a 4-5 minute ‘jam’ on a slow heavy immense riff, but they instead, they combine the heaviness of Vitus or Sabbath, with the melodies and vocals of Reverend Bizarre.

The bands sound is exactly what one would expect with a doom metal album, thick full guitars; vocals up in the mix, yet never over powering the guitars; and straight forward song songwriting. The three piece creates some of the most atmospheric doom metal today; its sound, vocals, and lyrics create an atmosphere that sinks into your skin and eats soul from within. This is quite apparent with the Lovecraftian lyrics in the brilliant song The Thing From the Black Reef, which eludes to the Shadow Over Innsmouth. The song creates and atmosphere reminiscent to how an outside would feel on the streets of Innsmouth. The thick, heavy guitars that interweave between the heavy bass lines create the darkness, and the vocals make you feel as if you can never get away.

If you want an album that is not too far from the path of doom metal, but yet unique enough to push the boundaries, than Wandering Midget is the band for you. They push the ideas of Reverend Bizarre, while maintaining their own identity and atmosphere.
