Who here is into Weather Report, this is my favorite non-metal band and they are in my top 20 favorite bands period.

:kickass:

I'm more a Jaco Pastorius fan than a Weather Report fan, but yes they were great.

My fave Jazz Fusion band is The Gary Willis band, featuring Dennis Chambers on drums. Crazy funk shit...

Sounds interesting, I might have to check that out.

I'm not a huge Weather Report fan, I find their music lacks cohesion and feeling. But I love Mahavishnu Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis etc

That is true, Jaco is the main reason I listen to WR, The main focus of that band was Joe Zawainul, the keyboardist, so alot of the music is focused around quirky keyboard shit.

Yeah weather report are awesome.
And thanks to who ever it was who meantioned The Gary Willis band, i love denis chambers drumming so ill give them a listen now.

Brand X (phil collins was in this band just as an FYI) were quite good. Billy Cobham is another (drummer) one that had its moments. But check into Brand X Moroccon Roll, Masques (2 screaming solos that were blazingly fast for back then IMHO, still kick ass too), X-Trax for a compilation/best of, Product (Don't make waves with phil c. on vocals). Strange/interesting stuff. Some of it was *out there* too, but definitely recommended.

I havent heard Weather Report in decades. As I recall they were kind of the beginning of smooth jazz I thought or was that Tropea ? Seems to me both were kind of easy on the ears and could be listened to in the presence of the ladies, who werent really into Mahavishnu or Spectrum or Return to Forever. I still play my fusion every once in awhile. Like old DiMeola, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jeff Becks Wired, Blow by Blow and Guitar shop, Cobhams Spectrum. I was a big Dixie Dregs fan but thats a different kind of fusion, not really jazz. Anybody that does enjoy fusion needs to check out Gamalon, they made an attempt at fusion in the late 80's and got nowhere with the record companys. I strongly advise checking them out on youtube under Gamalon or George Puleo. If you like it try to find the first recording simply titled Gamalon. Amazon has it. All strong songs except the last which is a jungle drum thing that I just cant get into.

Weather Report were a great band in my mind as were Return To Forever with Chic Corea. Are people aware that on Sep, 11 Joe Zawinul died due to a rare form of skin cancer. His music will LIVE on. The best jazz-fusion work for me was Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" so many awesome musicians played on that including Zawinul. Set a standard for music to come.

Ive got to get that Witches Brew, its always referenced to. I think Ponty played with Miles too, didnt he ? Seems like they all did.

Which, I forgot to mention we were big Ponty fans too, another great concert I went to back in the late 70's. It actually had great sound quality, a rare oddity.

Speaking of Ponty - I felt that Jerry Goodman, Jan Hammer, and Billy Cobham were Mahavishnus strong point not Mclaughlin. Just check out Jerry on youtube and notice how great it sounds until Mclaughlin kicks in, in ruff unison with awful weird tone and horrible phrasing or feel. Jerry Goodman was and is friggin awsome. Dr. (Allen) Sloan from the Dregs, awsome! Not that I dont like or appreaciate Mclaughlin and the stuff he did with Mahavishnu, but that he always seems to get the credit, however an honest listen to both versions of the band shows that the others had more talent, skill, feel and sound quality.

I'm really glad that there are so many people who like Weather Report, especially metalheads.I'm more of a fan of Jaco Pastorius, too. He's just perfect!!!are there any projects like Weather Report formed by young and new musicians?

Well, RazorEdge, I agree all members across the board with Mahavishnu were phenominal musicians. Make no mistake though, Mclaughlin was the Captain of that ship.

There's an amazing jazz fusion band from my home town called Void. Each member is prodigious at their instruments and I think they've just moved to the US and are headlining the Houston Jazz Festival.
