all the people in this board always talk about guitar players
what about drums?

who's your fave drum player?
who's ur fave Testament drum player?
what's ur fave drum section?

I play drums and I think thats why I like some of the newer metal bands that everyone here hates. Guitar is not as important in many newer bands.

Igor Cavalera
Lombardo/Tempesta (can't decide)
what do you mean by section?

and why isn't Tempesta in the booklet for Low?

Gene Hoglan is by far the best metal drummer (IMO)
Just take a listen to Dark Angel's Darkness Descends, Leave Scars and Time Does Not Heal as well as Death's Indivudual Thought Patterns and Symbolic.
I also think Glenn Evans of NUCLEAR ASSAULT is amazing as is Dave Lombardo of Slayer.
I have to say Louie was my favorite TestAmenT drummer, but thats because he was the 1st.
I think the best to play with them was of course "mean Gene the machine Hoglan"!
Ive seen them live with each and every one of the drummers theyve had along, but Gene's always been my favorite to watch.
He just rules all around, not just his drumming, but his lyrics and his song writing as well.

What has Gene Holgan written for lyrics?

I know Holgan played drums on Demonic, but I've also seen things that said John Dette did Demonic, do you know why?

Gene Hoglan..a monster
Mike Portnoy
Richard Christy
Igor Cavalera
Dave Lombardo
Sean Reinert
Thomen Stauch
Ventor
Steve Flynn
the guy from Dying Fetus :) he is speedy, really..

True Believer,
Gene Hoglan wrote 5 out of the 7 songs on DARKNESS DESCENDS (one of if not the best thrash album ever IMO, in Gene's it IS #1 LOL)
You can tell by the lyrical content which 2 songs he did NOT write even without looking.
He also wrote much of the music for the 4 most intense songs on that record.
He penned the lyrics on 5 of the 6 songs on LEAVE SCARS (of the other 3 tracks on the album, one is a cover and the other 2 are instrumentals) and again you can tell by the content without looking at the liner notes which song he did NOT write. He wrote the majority of the music on that record as well.
TIME DOES NOT HEAL, the bands most brilliant, intricate and ellaborate slab was almost entirely Gene's doing. He wrote the lyrics for all 9 songs and again was the chief composer of the music.
Gene is the most brilliant lyricist in metal, and he's written a bunch of killer music to go along with them.

True Believer, you are definetely 100% correct about drums being much more important and an integral part of the newer bands. Ive listened to alot of newer "metal" bands and thought "wow these guys really suck, but damn that drummer is great" Sevencrust..err.. I mean dust is a perfect example (IMO)

yeah, richard christy is great!!
especially death's sound of.. album

and don't forget cozy:saint:

and I don't like Dream Theatre so much but Mike is really good...
dave lombardo, I do love all the drum sections in The Gathering
Slayer have never been my fave band..

i know everyone loves gene - but i have only heard heard him on demonic and i didn't see what the big deal was. i wasn't blown over by his playing to be honest.

tempesta kicks ass on low.

Max,
if you love metal and have never heard DARK ANGEL, then you need to go buy their stuff ASAFP!!!
Gene also played on DEATH's Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic. Hes amazing, and to watch him live is fascinating.
Again pick up DARK ANGEL's Darkness Descends, Leave Scars and Time Does Not Heal and those 2 DEATH records as well.
(well pick up ALL the DEATH records if you dont have them because they ALL rule heh heh heh)
NO collection is complete without these masterpieces of metal!

Sean Reinert and Bobby Jarzombek tie for #1. Then comes Richard Christy, Asgeir Mickelson, Gene Hoglan, Dave Lombardo, Greg Hall, and many many others.

Tempesta was a studio musician on Low, I believe, and he is mentioned in the credits, just not credited as a band member.

I think we can all agree that Louie Clemente sucked; he was the weak link in the early days.

I think that the best drummer ever is Neil Peart, he has an amazing technique.

The best drummer in Testament, it's a hard decision, but i always liked Paul Bostaph, since he was in Forbidden.

@max

u ahve to get Death - Symbolic and concantrate on only Gene's drumming..then u r gonna understand how great he is on his instrument..especially the song Symbolic..its not only his speed on double-bass..his skills and domination on cymbals is also great..and listen carefully after 05:55 of Symbolic and see if u can catch something that even Richard Christy didnt play the same way in '' Live In L.A''..i am not a drummer, so i cant explain u exactly but its about his beats on snaredrum as i heard..

I've read that Dark Angel cds are out of print, and the only way I have now of listening to bands before buying a CD is downloading what mp3s they have at their website.

Another example of a new band with good drummer is Slipknot. Yes, I know you will not listen to me and continue to hate them, but they're drummer is incredible.

Try eBay.com or used record stores for Dark Angel cds. If anyone really wants to hear them and cant find anything Im more than happy to make cassettes from my vinyl. its better than nothing, but someones always putting stuff on ebay.
DARK ANGEL rules!

Jimbobhickville,
I do NOT agree that Louie Clemente sucked. Louie was an original member and when I listen to The Legacy and the other albums he played on I still think it sounds killer! I prefer to listen to this than the re recorded stuff on 1st Strike because Chuck doesnt hit those highs anymore and the old stuff is much more raw the way thrash should be.
I think Alex slowly BECAME the "weak link" and on the Ritual he was going one direction and the band was trying to go another. They were holding each other back.

Yea, i figured I could get them on ebay, but I would like to hear them first. I have nothing to download mp3s, so its a bitch to try and find mp3s for bands so i can hear them. My friends are pretty much only into metal since I got them into it, so they pretty much don't know of any metal band unless I tell them about it, so i cant borrow their cds either.

I can listen to them

I like drum solos anyway:cool:
