What are you doing to your kicks?

pretty much the same. i roll off the low end as high as 8ohz with a steep filter, depending on the material. I tend to also boost freqs above 6khz, i've found i prefer the sound over boosting highmids below 6khz.

surgical and mids eq -> comp -> clip -> lows and highs eq -> very gentle clip
mixed with track of samples with eq-> comp -> clip

both of those together to multiband to tighten the lows and accentuate some attack in the high mids, then that goes to eq again, then to another gentle clipping stage.

That's what i'm doing atm on my bands demo, sounds complicated i know, but it's making a sound i'm very happy with. I've tried going back to the beginning and doing it simply, but it just never comes close.

Surgical EQ, comp, general EQ.

That's it.

[on the rare occasion I wanna use a sample, I just mix it in - and have the general EQ after Aptrigga]

Depends on a lot of variables, but I never clip or filter low end. Scoop boxiness in the low mids boost low end if needed and usually do since a lot of drummers I deal with don't stab their kick like they should, might gate it with the side chain filtered to the resonant frequency of the drum or at least the most prominent so that the gate only opens on the kick, sometimes it sounds too surgical but it does depend on the project.

I will filter high end above 8-10k depending.

was completely replacing at one point, but stopped when i discovered, by accident of course, the 'gold in that ther' D6. mine doesn't sound great on it's own, but really adds some substance when in the mix.

real kick (thud) -> eq -> comp
sample (click) -> eq -> comp

send both to:

sub (50hz) (stillwell hugebooty)

send them all to parallel comp and bootsy rescue.

blend. voila!

For me a touch of EQ and Comp but seriously for a mighty metal chest thumping kick... layering and blending several samples can result in godly sounds ;)

3 (parallel) tracks of miced kick usually:

1 untouched or very gentle compression

1 EQ'd and compressed for big bottom

1 EQ'd an compressed for clicky attack

high pass at around 20. pretty steep
boost at 80 ish. cut at round 120 ish - or whereever the bass is.
more scoopage maybe at around 200-500.
boost 5 k
maybe lo pass as well at around 12 k or higher.
Compress 4:1 medium attack fast release.

This is for samples as well as mics;
of course it differs on the source material.
If im using samples ive made. ill process through outboard i.e api 550 and 1176 and so wont need to do much after that
