I go in cycles, but honestly, I agree with the guy to a certain extent.
While there are way, way, way too many bands rehashing unoriginal crap, there are quite a few very original acts out there. It's the same as in other genres, though. There will always be "mainstream" (as mainstream as metal can get) crap that, for the most part, all sounds pretty similar, but there will also be a fair bit of more 'underground' artists really pushing the limits.
Looking for those more original artists is what makes it fun for me... there's a big list of bands I could name that I absolutely love, and the fact that nearly nobody else is doing what they do is a big reason I like a lot of them so much.
