Non-existant?
Up shit creek without a paddle?
seriously- there's no way he could be replaced- even if he wasnt the main songwriter, Opeth would just not be...
Without Mikael there would be no Opeth... I'm sure that would be quite clear to most people... no doubt that ALL of Opeth are talented musicians, but without Mikael's inspired song writing skills, they wouldn't have any material to play. Hmm, I really wonder if Mikael will respond to this thread... and what he would say... haha.
Well, he does write most of the material, and sing, and share in the guitar playing. Most bands have a principal writer, though. And more often than not that person also fronts the band.
Without Mikael OPETH wouldn't exist because he's the only "original" member left over (from 1991)....and it sucks that the other guys in the band don't get as much recognition as him....Mikael and Peter wrote Orchid and Morningrise together.....Mikael didn't become the principle songwriter until MAYH (at least that's what he's said in interviews....)
Without Mikael, Opeth would never have been. I get the feeling that if he left, Opeth would stop, but Peter and the Martins would carry on as a different band, with another member or two. Perhaps?
This may just be my opinion, but I feel that if it wasn't for BOTH Mikael & Peter working together on orchid & morningrise, those musically GENIUS tunes would have never surfaced. It's kinda like the Beatles thing with Lennon & McCartney...both of them writing the songs together is what made all their songs such HUGE #1 successes. If BOTH minds weren't together, those songs would have never surfaced.....
And IMO, since orchid & morningrise, that epic, DYNAMIC feeling has been a bit lost...heck, MAYH is still a masterpiece and BWP is DAMN amazing while Still Life is very good as well, but...my favourite moments come from Orchid & Morningrise.
Anyway, to the question....Mikael truly, obviously, has been the MAIN guy. He's the heart & soul of the band I say....without him, things just wouldn't take off. (Like Mikael has stated in his previous interviews - someone HAS to be the leader. In Opeth, it just so happens to be HIM!)
I cant imagine Peter being upfront and being the only guitar player, he is so shy, quiet and intraverted. Mike is loud, confident, and outspoken, a true frontman! hehe
Mike's a pretty reserved guy too from what I've heard and read. Easygoing and friendly though, same as the rest of the band. I've read a few interviews with Peter and he has quite a lot to say too.
I agree with you that an Opeth without Mikael would equal nothing. It's like a Type O Negative without Peter Steele, Beatles without Lennon/McCartney, Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood without Lee Hazlewood or Satyricon without Satyr.
