Which ampsim to get?

I know I recently made a thread like this about drum plugins but I just think I need to make another one about getting an ampsim and clear a few things up for myself. So if this has been discussed a lot, I'd like it if someone could point me to a thread. The search function didn't really give me anything useful. :)

I was going to get ReValver HP for the guitars in the current project I'm working on but I now have the chance to stretch my budget a bit further. So since this seems the best place ask, here we go.

I'm using a Mac, in case that narrows anything down.

I could go for ReValver Mk III instead of HP, but is it any good and worth the money? How about the Metal Amp Room by Softube? It seems quite limited but some people here seem to like it very much. And GTR3 or Podfarm?

And how about Amplitube Metal? I've gotten the impression no one here really likes it. Why is that?

How do you guys with Macs load impulses? I checked out the FAQ but those plugs looked like Windows-only.

Thanks for any help!

Just that none of that free plugins work on a mac. I think?

Just try different out:
Amplitube
TH1
Guitar Rig 3
Studio Amp Devil Pro
Revalver MKIII
They all have demos and work on a mac (i think).

i've tried most of these and must say that i prefer guitar rig. but you could probably get a great tone using free sims and impulses. found a really nice killswitch preset which might actually be able to be passed off as a "real" guitar recording. Amplitude metal was real disappointing though.

Thank you all for replying. I'll probably have to check out some demos. A friend of mine owns guitar rig 3 and I somehow was never too impressed with it. He likes it though.

At the moment I'm kind of in between ReValver Mk III (it has 6505+ and the amps my band's guitarists use, plus a bunch of other cool shit.. Needs a bit more tweaking but that's okay. heard that the built-in effects are pretty weak) and Pod Farm Platinum(has good amps and lots of goodies but no 6505, but maybe Pod Farm can work well for metal even if it doesn't have the 'legendary' one in it? ).

I know I could probably get a good tone for free also, but I'm not sure how to get VSTs to work on mac and I'd kinda want a good all-in-one package for now, that'd also have effects and stuff in it.

This is what I use on my Mac running Ableton: http://audio.lernvall.com/

It is an AU plug in....works great, very low overhead

Hope that helps. Cheers! :kickass:

It does, thanks man! :)

First off, you guys are not reading the OP. He is on MAC, therefore all of the Acme and Crow sims are out of the question. PC only.

As mentioned, use LAConvolver to load impulses for free. For the record, PODfarm Platinum has the Criminal amp model which is a 5150II(6505+). It's not 100% accurate but it is one of the better amps from Line6 along with the Recto ones, Treadplate Dual and the more popular Cali Diamondplate. You can use either of those and bypass the cabsim in PODfarm to run a better impulse, such as the Catharsis Fredman ones, using LAconvolver.

Guitar Rig and Amplitube Metal just don't sound as good, that's all there is to it really. I own Metal Amp Room and once owned ReValver MKIII, MKIII is better off in many ways to MAR. Personally I'd go with PODfarm just because I've found it to be the most convenient for me paired with my PODxt Pro.

Thanks for the good reply! Very useful to know. Definitely tips the scale towards PODfarm for now. I'll order it the day after tomorrow, if I don't somehow end up choosing some other one.

Um... So if I get Podx3 will I get PODfarm Platinum for free? The difference in price is like 20 bucks.

http://line6.com/podx3/

or is it just the regular PODfarm that comes with the PODs? Man this is fucking confusing.

Well just thought I'd chirp in wit my 2 cents...

If I didn't make my own Computer amps...I would be using Revalver. I have found that out of the commercial sims, REV is the most realistic for my style of playing. I think that not all amp sims, or computer amps can be evaluated the same..I think it depends your particular style of playing. Someone may use GR and get a completely realistic sound out of it, and someone else playing with the identical preset will get something that sounds generated. There are many factors that go into it. Like string attack, string type, pick thickness, hell even whether or not the volume knob on the guitar is full. It all depends on what the developer has done to handle this in the sim.

Just some thoughts and observations I made through the course of building 30 Sims, and computer amps...Really you need to just spend some time with all of them in order to truly evaluate..and..make sure you record with them as well..

Man this is getting frustratingly hard. I wouldn't particulary need the POD X3, but the difference in price is pretty low. If I got the POD X3 I would need to have it connected anyway because the PODfarm would connect to it like an iLok even though I wouldn't want to use it for recording. Then again I could feel a little fucked over if I got a plugin that costs only a tad less than the plugin and the X3.

Maybe I should just get the ReValver...

JohnnyMcFly, you really should try and make Mac versions of those amp plugins so I could try them, we Mac people really need more free good stuff.

Right, so I placed an order ten minutes ago. Got the ReValver Mk III. Hope it's worth it, but I'm pretty sure I won't be disappointed :)

Thanks for all the great help people!

Tbh... get them all! :)

Seriously; if you had the money and room, wouldn't you want a whole house stacked with different amps for different moods and styles? I know I would. That's how I see amp sims. I've got PodFarm, Overloud TH-1, Amplitube 2, Hendrix, Metal, and Ampeg, and I also have RevalverMKIII - each one is great in its own way.

If you could only get one, then I'd say either Revalver or TH-1... probably more TH-1 than Revalver when I think about it.

Yeah, I'm at the moment planning to maybe buy TH-1 next if I feel I need more ampsims. Just heard lots of praise on TH-1 AFTER I had placed my order. Oh well. At least I know I didn't make a bad purchase either way.

I'm actually thinking of trying to switch my order from ReValver to TH-1 if I like its demo better than ReValver's. Have to give it a try when I get home.
