Nile and Satyricon(I probably spelt that wrong) also seem to be popular choices. I didn't really find either special, but I'm not a huge fan of either genre personally..

Oh, and as for black metal... the only non-satanic black metal band i know of is Immortal. I only have one of their albums so i can only really give suggestions form that. And from that i would say: One by One, In My Kingdom Cold, Antarctica and Beyond the North Waves

what do you mean by "satanic"?

but you might want to try out some of the bands that get labeled black metal but really arent. borknagar and solefald come to mind. also, arcturus's aspera hiems symfonia is one of my favorite "black" albums. finntroll, moonsorrow, sigh, enslaved, primordial, and emperor are good as well (though some of those aren't entirely full fledged black metal, but who wants mayhem clones? mayhem is terrible!) and you can take my word for it, i am by no means a fan of black metal, but these bands are good.

as for death metal bands, try bloodbath, cryptopsy, nile, morbid angel, arch enemy, and at the gates.

*actually, if you've never heard mayhem, you should download a song...just to laugh at it like i did!

Well I like melodic death metal like At the Gates, but nothing just straight death metal. "True" as some of you might say.

I like Morbid Angel's music, but they really kill it all for me with that "We're trying THIS hard to be evil" vibe.

Not really wild about Nile either, and I'm checking out all the other bands mentioned. I like the few songs I heard from The Sham Mirrors, but I haven't heard earlier Arcturus.

All Arcturus is good. All Emperor is good. Check out Windir, Burzum, Darkthrone, Khold, et cetera for true BM. Good pseudo-BM would be Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Anorexia Nervosa, and Ancient [I don't care for 'em, but a lot of people do].

As for DM... I really love Decapitated and Julie Laughs Nomore, though JLN are kind of off the wall in their vocal approach. I'm not big on straight-forward DM-- I much prefer progressive/technical DM, like Atheist, Death, Theory in Practice, Cynic and the like.

Oh, and you can't forget Origin. Good stuff.

I don't like mindlessly satanic stuff. I'm talking about bands that are about nothing but evilness and satanism and death. I mean, it just gets old and boring after a while. But I love growls and stuff and Children of Bodom and melodic metal and stuff.

I don't see the big deal about not liking 'satanic' stuff, its just not my thing.

Morbid Angel is good, please don't listen to Children of Bodom. They have cool guitar/keyboard solos, but I can't really think of a band that writes worse lyrics.
