In an interview with uDiscover Music's Kylie Olsson at this year's Ramblin' Man Fair, UGLY KID JOE frontman Whitfield Crane shared his evolution of thought toward the band's hit cover of Harry Chapin's "Cats In The Cradle". Appearing on UGLY KID JOE's 1992 studio album "America's Least Wanted", "Cats In The Cradle" was released as a single in 1993, eventually hitting No. 6 on Billboard Hot 100 charts. "I did get sick of it in 1995," he said (video below). "But we took off 15 years with UGLY KID JOE, so we've all evolved in some context. Now when we come back and play those songs, it's not only cathartic as a band to be together. I didn't know if we'd play again. Then, of course, you look out into an audience and you see, wow, people really love these songs. Therefore, I'm past 'I don't want to play it.' I'm like 'Let's play it all.'" Crane was then asked whether UGLY KID JOE has any plans to record a new studio album. The band's most recent effort, "Uglier Than They Used Ta Be", was released in 2015. "We just talked about that, funny enough, yesterday," he said. "We were like 'What should we do?' I don't imagine me doing a solo record. It's an UGLY KID JOE album, record, cassette tape. We're going to come back to the U.K. as an UGLY KID JOE fungus and we will get here around November 1 and we will by then — we have pieces of the puzzle already. There's full songs, parts of songs, this or that. We'll come back to the U.K., we'll throw ourselves in a studio for three to four weeks, and we'll see what happens in the petri dish, which will probably be an album." Crane will embark on his first-ever solo tour this September. He will play tracks from his extensive back catalog for the very first time, including songs from ANOTHER ANIMAL, MEDICATION, LIFE OF AGONY, YELLOWCAKE, RICHARDS/CRANE and, of course, UGLY KID JOE. An impressive cast of characters has assembled to bring these tracks to life, including Matt Reynolds (HAGGARD CAT) on guitar, Tom Marsh (HAGGARD CAT) on drums, and the inimitable Toshi (SLAVES TO GRAVITY) on bass.
