recent recordings made at the old location:
the devil wears prada / with roots above and branches above
miss may i / debut

recent recordings made at new location:
for the fallen dreams / relentless

im kinda bummed on the sound im getting here
cymbals just dont have that magic they had at the old location

its quite the effort to record there. i have to tear apart my desk and rack, and my computer, and move it all over.

old location is great. personally, i prefer this.;)
miss may i -> great songs.
did you use POD again for guitars joey? and, Diamond Plate?

Is there a hugh difference between the old and the new place?

the old location is a garage, almost air tight room, probably terrible as far as 100% acoustics go, but for some reason, cymbals sound great there

the new location is the dining room of a house, very open, not air tight at all

both have about the same cieling height, and carpet on the floor, regular walls (drywall at the old, painted drywall at the new)

i actually have a song that was recorded at both locations (weird how that worked out, long story), but i compare them and its really hard to tell with a blind a/b, but in a master i can hear something more going on with overheads from the old location

im most satisfied with the cymbal sounds i got on oceano and tdwp_new

i really havent been able to measure up since

Is the new place permanent? If so, I would just keep working there. Once you learn the room and it's "sound" you will be able to work better with it. Can your clients tell a difference in your work, or are they unsatisfied?

maybe buy some absorber, and some other acustic treatment. this might help....
I realy liked the "for the fallen dreams" song you posted sometime ago. The cymbals sounded great man

nah, my clients are always really happy with what i've done

its just my personal inside opinion eating at me

i need to start yelling at drummers more, telling them to stop hitting like pussies

I'd be hesitant to revert back to an old facility if the intent of moving into a new one was, uh, to use it (obvious man is obvious, sorry).

Do you own both places (and thus no chance of ever losing one of them)? If so, it could be potentially worth it to at least have a mobile rig that would make moving between both places...But I still think that if the clients are happy with what is happening at the new place that you'd be able to get your current facility sounding the way you want over time.

i couldnt tell you what i did recently
i use pod farm, and change it like every 3 seconds and record it
so it ends up being a shit load of different settings all over the place depending on the part

sorry

ok, thanks.
and, how do you record guitar signal?? guitar directly into your fireface interface PREAMP or do you use a DI box?

i suppose you record only guitar signal and then you apply pod farm...

and...miss may i, quad or doubletracked?

and i REPEAT, yes, i prefer old location for drums sound.;)

thanks a lot,

So what is it that you don't like about the sound currently? By reading into what you wrote, are you getting too much kit in the mics vs. the cymbals (thus thinking if they hit the cymbals harder you'd get better results)?

you're most likely right

it probably just comes down to the cymbals being used, really

im not relying on a lot of ambience, to be honest.

i need a mobile rig tho O_O

there seems to be more detail (as in i can listen and distinctly tell what the drummer is doing with the cymbals) in prada as compared to FTFD

and im not basing that on complexity of the parts or drummer

just seems like a difference in clarity within the kit

i dont have a problem with bleed in either location

Odd truth in this.. I much prefer the sound of my cymbals in my garage than in any other location.

But I'm surprised you get more clarity in the garage.. I think my cymbals sound better there but with all the bouncing around of high-freqs I think I lose a lot of clarity. I notice it when I compress the cymbals too much, the stereo image starts going weird (but working with cymbal samples here tho).

hmm

maybe by clarity i mean, you can hear the cymbal sustain more, which would be about the same thing you're describing

In this kind of situation, do what you do feel most comfortable with.
As long as you still like your old room that much and it's still possible to track there, do it...do what feels and sounds best to you personally.
