And how would you relate the build and tone to be? Personally I want a darker flavored sound, but I can't trust the reviews because no one plays real hard fuckin' metal. You guys should know if Eminence has the chops, any recommendations?

Someone awesome from the forum posted a shoot out between the standard V30 and the eminence equivalent a long while back, It may even have been Andy. The eminence stacked up pretty favorably but everyone still preferred the V30 if I recall. Maybe someone has the link handy.

I have andys speaker comparisons..don't know if its really from andy but the folder is named so. I can upload it on dropbox if it's legit.

I posted up a comparison a while ago that noone fucking liked.

But, if you're looking for a darker sound than a V30, the Texas Heat is pretty tits.

As far as build quality goes, they're built like a brick shithouse. They have fancypants little rubber things that cover up the ferrite on the magnet so it doesn't get chipped up from people sticking shit in the back of combo amps. The Texas Heats in particular weigh somewhere around 17 pounds each, which is a little heavier than a V30 IIRC, and the stamped steel they're made out of is pretty hefty stuff. I don't forsee it getting bent or fucked up by accident anytime soon.

I'm runnin a.. *puts up flameshield* Vader 2x12 with a Randall RM100. I've played death metal through it, and I regularly play some thrash. The amp is fucking beast. Sits in a live mix well, smooths out solid state amp hiss/shit, and can handle however much low end you throw at it without sounding boomy. Comes stock with OEM Eminence Legend V128 variants.

Not a good comparison, the amp was obviously EQ'd for the V30, because every other speaker sounded really bad. There really shouldn't be any high quality speaker that sounds "bad", anyone with a good ear should be able to get a good tone out of any speaker. Unfortunately the general consensus here is "V30 OR DYE", which gives the assumption that all other speakers are crap.

I had Governors some years ago and they are great, thicker sounding mids than V30s but they didnt use to record so well. The Wizard is also awesome.

IMO, Eminences sound BADASS live, but are much harder to get them to work in a recording. It's possible, but you can't just assume you can mic it the same way you'd mic your V30 cab, it'll take some time to learn the speaker and where your placement should be. I find that a lot of them sound pretty harsh when miced, so throwing in a ribbon mic a few inches/feet back, or using a condenser as a room mic to fatten up the tone might be the best way to balance it and really bring out the "huge" tone of them.

^Exactly. Not every speaker is as easy as 57 at the cone edge. If it sounds good in the room, it is possible to capture that.

I think it was a fair comparison. If they'd changed the EQ for each speaker someone would be arguing the other way that you didn't have a baseline.

The comparison video I just posted yielded some very interesting observations. Would I be an idiot to only buy one for recording/chaining into my cab?

I really like my 1x12 combo with a Governor. It was 50 bucks cheaper than a V30 and made in the US instead of China.

I used Eminence speakers in a Sovtek cab and whilst it was great for live it sounded not so great recorded. V30's are smoother and have less gravel. I have a much easier time now with my Mesa oversized with V30's. I guess the consensus matches what I found personally. Miss the Sovtek Mig100 head though. Was great for Aussie hard rock but lacked enough saturated gain for chug style riffs...

It's going to sound like trash when you put a microphone in front of it. I learned from experience, Eminence Legends and Vader cabs are awful. They look much better than they sound. I thought mine were magnificent in band practice until I changed back to Mesa cabinets.

This may be true. But I personally can't stand the Mesa cab tone. There are certain bands who I like who have shaped their sound around it, but I'm sick of that tone. I plan on trying what MC posted when I get my home studio up and running and try a nice dynamic and a ribbon or condenser to fill out the sound. I'm determined to prove that Vaders can sound good in a recording lol!

However, it could just be the whole "turns out roadworthy workhorse really sounds like ass" thing (Sovtek tubes anybody?).
