who's switching to snow leopard?

My parents plan on upgrading, so of course I'll get sucked into learning more about OS X to be their tech support facility... I need to find out which version they're currently using (unfortunately, I doubt they're getting the $25 upgrade) but hopefully my student discount will cut the price.

I was advised from the folks at the Apple store it will run on the G5

I thought the release of Snow Leopard was the end of PPC(G5/G4) OS upgrades?

hmmm, the same was said for Logic 9, yet it runs fine on PPC macs.
i think Apples License agreement states that only Intel macs are "supported", meaning that it if you somehow convince it to run on a PPC , your on your own.

this is definatly a marketing stratagy (at least in part), to sell more new macs.
but it also ties in with the way Apple manage hardware, they're usually eager to ditch old technologly and move forward. as far as i know, they were the first to drop the floppy disk, and serial ports, and at least partly responsible for the widespread acceptance of USB as a standard for all peripherals. (someone correct me if im wrong on that).

point is, these kind of moves will anger people who still have older machines and don't want to upgrade, but Apple will move forward with end-to-end 64bit processing as standard and shiny new intel processors, while Microsoft are still left supporting mountains of derelict hardware in 32-bit for the next decade.

sucks, but thats the way Apple play it. god knows i'd have nothing to do with them if it wasn't for Logic 9.

I don't think I'll jump now since this computer is really stable ( 10.5.8)

I prefer to get all the apps really sorted to the new os, so I'll wait for now :)

your completely right about everything. after using macs exclusively for a few years, and working for them for a year, I have come to accept that this is how they operate. I think its great to move forward.

and for ppc users, It may still work, but is not supported (not a big deal, cause most ppcs are out of warrantee. and buying apple software gives you 90 days of free support. the reason its not supported is because they want to eliminate supporting ppcs.)

Im going to upgrade AFTER all my sessions are finished because installing the os will mean I have to re install all my fucking software again....

Installed on my MBP just now - haven't launched up Cubase but everything is running really fucking snappy! I'm going to have to reinstall DrumTracker... the icon disappeared from my dock and the program from my applications folder. Strange.

everything running smoothly, Pro Tools 8 running just fine on a macbook if not better than with Leopard. just be sure to check important apps for updates to suit better with snow leopard if available and you're good to go

Had a vocal session today and everything performed beautifully. Boot up/shut down times are faster, and every program on the system loads/responds quicker. Really digging this update! Oh yeah DrumTracker reinstalled without a hitch, and kept my registration info from before!
