who's switching to snow leopard?

your completely right about everything. after using macs exclusively for a few years, and working for them for a year, I have come to accept that this is how they operate. I think its great to move forward.

and for ppc users, It may still work, but is not supported (not a big deal, cause most ppcs are out of warrantee. and buying apple software gives you 90 days of free support. the reason its not supported is because they want to eliminate supporting ppcs.)

Im going to upgrade AFTER all my sessions are finished because installing the os will mean I have to re install all my fucking software again....

ode to joy

This is the first Mac OS release since the introduction of System 7.1.2 that does not support the PowerPC architecture, as Apple now intends to focus on its current line of Intel-based products.

This is the situation - PowerPC is gone - the last August 2006 G5 is now a time capsule setup. There are no dual binaries in the installer.

I was using macs when Apple ditched Motorola 68000 in favour of the PowerPC. That was about 1995. I have the benefit of hindsight in this. I've been using macs since the mac came out - the irony of the shift to intel is enormous, it really is...

has anyone had a problem who uses their pod as their main sound card type thing?

apparently the driver is only a beta as line6 monkey has bugs.

My buddy has had major problems with his EastWest libraries. The EastWest PLAY engine does not work properly with Snow Leopard. EW acknowledged that too, so it must be a common problem. My friend is really pissed cause he just bought EW Silk for 500 bucks and can't use it (along with his other libs) ...

i switched to snow a few days ago. even to 10.6.1 but it was not compatible with my tone port neither with cubase 5, so i took the time machine back to 10.5.8 and i'm happy again.

waiting for 10.6.3 or more, maybe approval from steinberg/line 6/motu.

if you buy and upgrade make sure you have a backup!!!!

Also it's a bad idea to upgrade your OS; always do a fresh install of an OS, and then migrate your stuff over from a backup disk image using the migration wizard that OSX has.

There isnt a clean install option with Snow Leopard during boot up, only an upgrade. If you wanted to do a fresh install, you'd have to get the Mac box set.

Snow leopard feels more like a major update rather than a new OS.

Damn, wonder if my Profire 2626, PT8 and plugins will work on Snow Leopard. Apparently I automatically get SL when buying a new MacPro :/

I wouldn't count on it.

There is a PT 8.0.3PR update you can get, for Snow Leopard but it's not fully tested and theres no tech support.

* Important: Pro Tools 8.0.3pr software is prerelease software, and is not fully tested or supported by Avid. Technical Support is not available for prerelease software. We recommend backing up your system and work files before using this software, or installing a fresh copy of Mac OS X 10.6 on a different system partition. In preliminary testing, we’ve found most plug-ins to be compatible with Pro Tools 8.0.3pr and Snow Leopard.
