Why Audio Quality Matters

I just watched the whole thing. It was definitely worth it, nice discussion. They brought up some valid points and highlighted the importance of certain aspects of recording quality, but it's important to have in mind that there are a million other things you have to take into consideration. Recording and mixing in 192khz/32 might sound good but it will punish your pc/mac. Preserving the full dynamic range of a song may result in a more natural listening experience but chances are the song will be ignored because it's not loud enough to grab the listener's attention. Using a minimalistic setup will result in a real sounding mix but it will also limit your creative possibilities and so on...

BTW, I just listened to one of the artists discussed (Maresa MacBeth). Does liking her music make me a uber sissy?

Anyway, the production is top-notch. Listen to "The Dancer" for example. Every instrument and in fact the whole mix are pretty much as close to perfection as possible. The two times she sings in F# at the end of "Echo of You" send shivers down my spine when listening on headphones. Music has rarely affected me in this way, lately. Ten years ago all of my favourite bands had a huge effect on me while listening, but I don't agree that this is because of the quality of the medium, I was listening to tape copies and 128 kb/s mp3s. I think the problem is we've become saturated because we are exposed to thousands upon thousands of bands and artists.
